I agree with wliwl that the title of this post is a bit vague and that a reference to Maui Upcountry will make the nature of the question more clear on the main page and thus likely draw forth more answers.
As to your questions - which botanical gardens are you referring to (there are several on Maui). We really liked the Garden of Eden botanical gardens on the Road to Hana.
Regarding the winery area - though we did not tour the winery (we did stop to buy some wine though) we really loved Maui upcountry in general - and the area around the winery in particular (espcially just coming from the moon-like area along Maui's south shore). Upcounty was actually our favorite part of the island. Obviously there are no beaches up there, but the landscape is pastoral and lovely - and the views are terrific. Very, very nice area indeed.

I enjoyed the wine tasting at the Tedeschi Vineyard especially the raspberry wine. Yummy! The ladies pouring the wine were very pleasant.
Also, if you get a chance, have a burger at the ranch store across the street. They make it with their own Maui beef on a grill out on the patio; it was really delicious.
We also visited the Kula Botanical Garden and the Tropical Gardens of Maui. Neither of them was spectacular; didn't make it to the Garden of Eden on the Road to Hana, but I hear that one is really beautiful.
