To Maui in August -- Need Advice

We are leaving for Maui in early August for an 8 night trip to Maui with the kids (ages 8 and 6 - and their first trip to the Isaland). We are staying at the Fairmont Kea Lani (Chosen mostly because of the space in the room for all four of us!!). I'd love for some ideas on places to eat, sites to see and things that we shouldnt forget to do - especially with kids.

I'd love a recommendation on a good Luau in Wailea (if there is one!) so we don't have to drag the kids out for that far a drive to and from to get to one in Lahaina.

Thanks!!

Friends of mine have been to both the Old Lahaina Luau in Lahaina and the Luau at the Maui Prince and they preferred the food at the Maui Prince, they liked the show at both with a little edge on the Maui Prince

The Maui Prince, I believe is closer to Wailea

Haleakala sunrise is nice. Actually anytime if you can't get the kids up that early.

Road to Hana. Make lots of stops so the kids don't get bored. Lots of waterfalls. Some may be pretty dry in August though.

They are old enough for snorkeling.

Several free Polynesian shows. Check the free brochures for locations and times.

Drums of the Pacific at the Hyatt is a good luau. They have the best fire knife dancer on Maui.

Royal Lahaina Luau may be the best value. Lots of coup[ons available including one in Entertainment Book. 25% off for up to four people. Other coupons in the ffee brochures you'll find all over Maui.

Nice sites:

www.gohawaii.com Free brochure

www.mauihawaii.org Great site of Maui Jon. Has good dining section.

www.alternative-hawaii.com Dining section. Good narrative drive guides w/photos.

www.driveguidemagazines.com Good maps & good restaurant guide.

www.thisweek.com This Week on Maui XXX

www.spotlighthawaii.com Maui Gold XXX

www.101thingstodo.com 101 Things to do on Maui XXX

XXX - These have free brochures that you can pick up at airport baggage area and other places on Maui.

Buy a copy of 'Maui Revealed'.

You'll likely be spending most of your time in the pools or on the beach.

But for a break from the heat and sun, the Maui Ocean Center is a great place to go. Try and see the ray feedings (the diver in the tank is wired, so the audience can ask questions and he can talk to you while he's in the tank "working"). The aquarium is about half way between Wailea and Lahaina.

Unless your kids like really long car rides, I'd recommend not driving to Hana. Some folks do fine with it, but many do not. There's a reason why they sell "I Survived the Road to Hana" shirts!

For restaurants, Roy's in Kihea is good with families. The Italian restaurant at the Kea Lani is decent and has good carry-out. We love going to the Wailea golf course for lunch. Great views, decent food that is reasonbly priced, and a delicious warm brownie sundae!

Snorkeling is fun, and you can get special snorkeling vests for the kids.

I also recommend the Maui Revealed book.

There is a great magic show in Lahaina called Warren and Annabell's (sp?) It is not your typical magic show and I think they offer a ealier show so the kids can go. I would highly recommend it.
