While that area may be safe it is nowhere near what you want to be. It would take you at least an hour to get into Manhattan - and quite possibly longer. Esp at night this would be very difficult to get to - possibly involving multiple subways and buses - or even expensive cab fare (buses may run once per hour or less at night).

You want to stay IN Manhattan (new york, NYH). If you can;t find something for your price there - check out Long Island City - about 15 minutes away by subway - as long as the motel is near the subway. Town and Country Suites has a good reputation - although the area is mixed use (budget motels mixed with warehouses and auto body shops - with few services).
