One thing I love to do when I'm up visiting family in Truckee during the summer is go to West End Beach at Donner Lake. It's a great old-fashioned family beach with picnic tables and play areas, horseshoe pits, a concession stand and kayak/paddleboat rentals, which are really fun to paddle around the lake, checking out the lovely lakeside homes. Very relaxing, beautiful scenery, and the water's not so cold as Lake Tahoe.

Virginia City, the gold mining ghost town which was inhabited my Mark Twain ar one point, is a fun expedition in Nevada, south of Reno, for the whole family. You can get tours of the underground mines, visit the graveyard, check into an old saloon. Assigned reading: "Roughing It". --how Twain and his brother made it mining in Virginia City, and set parts of the shore at Lake Tahoe afire.
