46th St between 8th and 9th Ave where Joe Allen is located is called Restaurant Row, many choices available in that block. B. Smith offers very good updated soul food. Look at 9th Avenue in the 40s for a number of good ethnic restaurants.
Others nearby include West Bank Café, Marseille, Room Service, Molyvos.
Stay away from the Times Square chain restaurants.

Agree with Molyvos near Carnegie Hall, good Greek food, roast chicken, baked lamb shank, grilled fish, all well done.
We ate at Don Antonio at 50th & 8th, a branch of a Naples restaurant serving nicely blistered thin crust pizza, light on the sauce and cheese. Open late so perhaps better for an after show meal, since no reservations taken.

Here's a link to an excellent food blog with the section on Hell's Kitchen, the area just west of Times Square.
