Hope you get more responses. Here are my thoughts, for what they are worth. Both Black Butte and Sunriver are vacation resort communities in Central Oregon. BB is to the northwest of Bend (west of Sisters OR), nestled on the descending side of the Cascade Mts. As such, it is in a little valley area and has a cozy feel to it.
Sunriver is south of Bend, in a Ponderosa forest just east of the Cascades and Mt. Bachelor, so has mountains to the west and the high desert to the east.
In summer, both offer lots of bike paths, horseback riding, etc. Condo and house rentals are available at both places, as well as stays at the Lodge. Sun River has a little "planned" town in it. Black Butte is a short drive from Sisters, a real town.
I believe Black Butte has more organized activities during the summer; more pools, too. I'd say Black Butte is considered better planned and organized - more upscale than Sun River (though Sun River is nice).
That said, though we've driven through Black Butte, we've only stayed at Sun River, probably because we've gone in the winter and Sunriver is closer to Mt. Bachelor, the premier ski resort in Oregon. Black Butte is closer to the much smaller Hoodoo ski area, which is not far to its west and over high passes, therefore, the road conditions are worse at Black Butte in winter. So, if you're not sure about your traction in winter, Sunriver has a safer feel. Plus, it is near Bachelor.
In sum, I'd say, Black Butte in summer, Sun River in winter.

I've lived in California, Oregon, New Mexico & all over Europe and would have to say for natural beauty I'd pick Western Washington...Mt. Rainer, the Olympic Pennisula, the San Quan Islands, Stevens Pass area. (Especially in mid July through Sept.)
