THE Hotel at Mandalay Bay
Does anyone have any first-hand knowledge of the new hotel called, THE Hotel at Mandalay Bay? We are considering visiting the first weekend in May and am curious about this hotel. Thanks.

It's a new tower attached to Mandalay Bay. Bigger rooms, all suites, 42 "plasma screen TV's, etc. The MB website explains in detail with photos.
I'm staying there next month but haven't yet talked to someone who's been there since its opening about 8 weeks ago.

traveleis,
Have you stayed there yet, and if so, how did you like it? Someone I know who's stayed at the Mandalay Bay complained of long check in lines. Hoping that the situation is better at theHotel...? Thanks!

I stayed at the regular Mandalay last month and was disappointed. At the same time, some of my friends were in THEHotel and raved about how beautiful and large the rooms were....not to mention the rooms were cheaper! I wandered around the lobby and it's very chic.

Just returned a couple days ago.
Overall I think Mandalay did a very nice job with THEhotel (wish they'd change the name...not very catchy IMO). THEhotel is nothing at all like Mandalay Bay. Totally different concept and design.
Since it's a new hotel tower everything is very clean, sharp and nice. It's a very upscale feeling place, without even a hint of cheesiness. You'd never know you were in Las Vegas from anywhere inside THEhotel or its rooms.
It has a modern flair to it, so it's not grand scale opulence, more like one of the new Four Seasons (San Francisco) or Ritz Carltons (Boston). We had a rate of $169, but rates have recently been running much higher.
Here are the basics:
--standard rooms = 750 sq. ft.
--colors are rather 'bachelor pad'-ish; furniture is black lacquer and retro 1960's kind of style in living room (tastefully done IMO), and similar but modern feeling in bedroom; bathroom had dark brown marble shower, nice size, separate water closet, tub and shower separate.
--42" plasma TV/DVD in living room, large flat screen TV in BR (~32 inch), and small plasma TV in bathroom
--living room and bedroom are entirely separate so this is a true suite set-up, unlike Venetian's long single room with small step-down
--towels relatively thick and much better than average quality (for Las Vegas)
--toiletries were house brand
--very quiet/peaceful hotel and halls
--hotel attaches to Mandalay at the Sports Book corner of the casino
--THEhotel will have its own pool but this is not yet complete; of course access to Mandalay's complex is included, though.
Gripes: the carpeting (rooms and halls) will not wear well and will look crummy and cheap in nothing flat. Same with some of the couch and chair upholstery in the rooms. It's going to wear in a hurry. Looks fine now.
Also, the entrance is hard to find, poorly marked, in the back of the property, and hard to recognize even when you're pulling up to it in the driveway.
Other impressions: hotel's lobby is very Asian-influenced and very stylish looking; 3 story ceilings with everything in black and soft yellow light; reminded me more of a stylish NYC hotel than anything in Las Vegas.
Entrance to THEhotel is on the I-15 side of the property off of Frank Sinatra Blvd; there's no direct access from the Strip.
Right now (in its current condition) I'd rate THEhotel higher than Venetian for overall room quality. The standard rooms at THEhotel are quite a bit more spacious (extra 240 sq ft) vs. Bellagio and offer very nice amenities, but I still like the overall experience better at Bellagio because of the restaurants, ambience, lake, location and style of the decor at Bellagio.
For a <standard room> at the same price, I'd probably choose THEhotel.

Hi
I stayed at the Mandalay Bay February 2004 (sorry, not The Hotel). 2 things -- the registration "lines" were nasty; there was absolutely no order. Secondly, staying at the Mandalay -- you couldn't be farther from anything on the Strip. I would opt for a more central location.

Thank you so much for such a thorough review, traveleis! You've gotten me a little more excited about staying there! Sounds pretty good, even though I know the location isn't the best on the strip, and I do like the Venetian...
one more question if you don't mind...was THEhotel crowded? Check-in fine? Service? (oops, that was more than one!! Thanks again!)

traveleis-we also have reservations at TheHotel in April. We also have reservations at Mirage so I'm trying to decide between the 2. I was wondering if the walk to the Mandalay Bay restaurants, bars, and pool is far. This is our 1st trip to Vegas(with 17 and 20 y.o.), and its a hard choice on whether to go for the bigger suite, or the central location of the Mirage. Any opinions? Thanks.

Check-in was quick at about 6 PM on a weekday. Average 2-3 people waiting in line for each clerk at the desk.
I'm sure weekends are busier.
Service: I talked with our housekeeper a few times, who was very nice. Wanted to tip her personally for providing extra towels and such. Front desk personnel were very nice as well. I didn't interact with anyone else from the hotel. I'd guess overall service is like Venetian's. Same type of employees will apply for jobs at either place. None of the casino hotels offer the same level of service you can get in a nice large American business hotel.
Mirage vs. THEhotel: if nice rooms are really important to you, choose THEhotel. Rooms are much nicer than Mirage's standard rooms and twice the size. Some people aren't all that picky about hotel rooms. I'm the opposite. If you really don't care all that much about room quality and location is important, choose Mirage. Mandalay's location makes it almost impossible to comfortable walk to the mid-strip when it's hot outside. Cabs are easy, but cost adds up.
Your 17 and 20 y/o would LOVE Mandalay's pools (wave pool, beach, lazy river, etc). Mirage has a nice pool complex, but MB's is head and shoulders above all the rest in Las Vegas for people from about 5-18 years old. Then they start gravitating to the Hard Rock scene.
The walk from THEhotel's lobby doors to the hallway entry where most of Mandalay's restaurants are located is about 150 feet or so. By Las Vegas resort standards they're close together. The pools at MB are a much longer hike. Easily a 7-9 minute walk.
Just depends on what your priorities are.

THEhotel is L-shaped with one leg of the L running basically north-south parallel to the interstate and the Strip, the other running perpendicular to the Strip. Since the whole tower is set back behind Mandalay Bay, none of the rooms are really close to the Strip, but from the higher floors, the view toward the Strip is quite nice. It appears that about 1/4 of the rooms will have no actual Strip view, and 3/4 get at least a good portion of it.
To request? High floor, not facing the interstate. The tower has about 40 floors of rooms (but the top floor is labeled 62 in the elevator, with no floors in the 50's).

I just returned from THEhotel, and most of the things Traveleis said were accurate. For now, THEhotel is nice, because it is new, but I'm not sure it will wear well at all.
My big gripe with the Man. Bay Hotel is the service. I found it incredibly slow, even at places without any lines. Just really poor.
During this trip, we revisited both the Venetian and the Bellagio, and meals/drinks at both these hotels were so much better in every way...service and quality...
I'd definitely stay at either of these places again over the new THEhotel.
I also think 20 somethings might like it better than I did because it's so trendy...
