Hubby and I will be traveling to San Diego to visit daughter for Thanksgiving. We three would like suggestions of a good/quaint/interesting location restaurant that serves traditional Thanksgiving Dinner. We have eaten at the Del in the past--it was good but pricey. So this year we would like a new place to try. It could be outside of San Diego but not more that about 1/2 hours drive. Preferably not a buffet and no chain restaurants, something more unique in its setting.

This is a big order I realize, but give me your best shot.

As I recall, San Diego doesn't do quaint very much, except quaintly Mexican. You might try one of the big hotels downtown, the Grand Hyatt or one of those. Maybe George's in La Jolla might do T'giving dinner.

Might try The Marine Room, La Jolla, located within feet of the sandy beach and huge windows to see the beautiful sights.

Margo, I'm just back from San Diego/La Jolla. Had a GREAT time & ate in 7 restaurants. I have 2 suggestions for your Thanksgiving-one "quaint" fancy/elegant-The rest. at the Lodge at Torey Pines called AR Valentien. This place was listed in Gourmet Magazine's best picks for San Diego. The Lodge itself is classic Arts & Crafts mission style. It's beautiful & very different in feel from the Del. The restaurant has lovely views out to the golf course. Their Thanksgiving menu is $65/person for 3 courses-lots of choices. They said they're booked up for large parties but have room for parties of 4 or less. Phone is 858 777 6635. There's valet parking, it's easy to get to & the staff is very friendly (not snooty). I just went for lunch & had a burger in order to sit outside on the deck, but the food looked great (& my burger was excellent).

For "quaint" informal, try the Brockton Villa in La Jolla. This place is right across from the beach with beautiful views from virtually every table-some outside, some inside & some in a covered porch area. Inside there's a spectacular fireplace made of shells. The place has a long history starting as a "shack". It's a popular breakfast place but I'd imagine it would be good & not expensive. They didn't have a menu yet for Thanksgiving & couldn't tell me about price. It's at 1235 Coast Blvd in La Jolla. Phone 858 454 7393.

mclaurie--Thanks for the suggestions. I forwarded them on to daughter to check them out. She also had suggested going to Julian but that seems rather far to me--about one hour I think.

Yes, it is HOT in San Diego today. I am on the coast but the inland is on FIRE! It is raining ashes everywhere.

Back to the topic, I have heard great things about The Lodge although I have not been there. The Four Seasons Bistro in the South Carlsbad/Aviara might be another option for you. One of my favorite restaurants just emailed me their Thanksgiving menu. It looks amazing! The restaurant is called Pompelmousse in Del Mar across from the race track. Everyone I have sent there has raved about it.

Our restaurant will be closed for the holiday and we are taking the kids to a shelter to cook a gourmet dinner for the homeless.

Calamari, you have a restaurant? Wish I had known. Please tell us about it. Just spoke to my friends in La Jolla. It's raining ashes where they are & they sound a bit stressed. Hope the winds die down quickly.

We are safe in La Jolla, Del Mar, Carlsbad, but a lot of evacuees are heading west. The ashes are coming down more and more. Makes me think of Pompeii (this is a travel site after all)

I like that suggestion of the Brockton Villa! It's funky and charming and what a view! Parking very tough there,though.

I really enjoy a small pub style restaraunt called Hennessey's. Very relaxed and affordable and the best turkey dinners!! as well as many other items. There is one in the Gaslamp area, Pacific Beach area, and Carlsbad.
