NYC is huge place and "expensive" is a relative term...but if you're looking for Times Square check out www.portlandsquarehotel.com

I travel to NYC by myself many many times and have never had a problem.

NYC is the safest large city in the US and one of the safest large cities in the world.

Chicago Tribune has an article on reasonably priced NYC hotels in today's travel section. Also, check out places on tripadvisor.com

You can get the Radisson Lexington for those dates at $139/night on:

www.radisson.com

on their "web hot deals". It's a pre-pay rate, so you won't be able to change it once you book. The rooms are small, but it's a super location in mid-town east (48th & Lexington) where you will be able to walk to Rockefeller Center, Times Square, etc.; plus great subway access.

NYC is a big place. I assume you're going for something in particular. You might want to stay near your "activity."

That aside, I went to quikbook.com & put in your dates & chose hotels in the $100-150 category (you could select under $99 though). The 2 cheapest places that came up were the West Park Hotel (near Columbus Circle which is the west side at the north end of "midtown") for $106/night and the Gramercy Park Hotel (at Gramercy Park which is a beautiful private park in the 20's in a nice mostly residential area) for $106/night. There may be taxes on top of these prices. The Gramercy Park is an old hotel and many of the rooms are a bit worn, but the place is fine. I think they've renovated the public spaces recently though. Look on tripadvisor.com for reviews of the West Park (or check in the tetx search here.)
