Texas travel

We have one day and night near Austin. What do you suggest? What to see? Where to stay?

Thanks.
We will be spending the next two nights in Austin but wanted someplace else for one night. (We love Austin.)

When you are in Austin, go to Antone's or the Continental Club at night for good music. For a really good dinner, Eddie V's is my recommendation.

Out of Austin, my favourite towns are Luckenbach and Gruene. Gruene has accomodation, e.g. http://www.gruenemansioninn.com/.

Sleeping in Gruene has the advantage that you can spend the night at Gruene Hall:

I would go to Gruene too. Lots of cute little shops, and you can eat at the Grist Mill right on the river. We love the Gruene Apple www.grueneapple.com.

Another option is to go to San Antonio and stay on the River Walk for a night.

We just visited the Austin Botanical Gardens for the first time - really neat spot. Also check out the bats and go to the Oasis.

Thanks to all of you who replied. We have "done" the River Walk before. I'll check out Gruene. Also, the Oasis is on our list.

Luckenbach is a town? It wasn't when I was there a few years ago. Anyway, I recommend Ladybird's Wildflower Gardens and the LBJ Ranch and just an open day of exploring and rambling mosty anywhere in the Hill Country.

Get the homemade wine coolers at the Grist Mill; they're made with fresh fruit and really good when it's hot outside, which is pretty much always in the summer!

Don't forget to get a Bluebell ice cream cone at the general store.
