Last minute trip to Austin/San Antonio
Okay... we were going to go some place over 4th of July sometime ago and canceled it because we were going to our timeshare at Lake Texoma later in the month. As schedules have it - we are going to Waco (from DFW area) on July 1 for a college visit. My husband would like to keep driving and go to Austin and on Sat head over to San Antonio.
We are new to Texas - having only lived here for about 10 months now. (in the DFW area)
We will be traveling with our 17 and 14 year old. Yes, I know it is a holiday weekend.
Would you stop in Austin (our visit will be done at Baylor around 3:00 or so) or just keep going to San Antonio?
We will be driving home Sunday if we proceed.
Thanks so much!
I am looking at Marriott properties because we are Platinum members and can use points. There are several Marriott properties still available on points in both areas.

I want to say that you should stop in Austin, but if your goal is to visit San Antonio and return to DFW on Sunday, then you really don't have time for Austin as well.
If you decide to stay in Austin, be sure to go watch the bats come out from under the Congress Ave. bridge at sunset--an amazing sight. You won't have time for the Bob Bullock Museum, Barton Springs, the UT campus and the Drag or a Segway tour (which is fun way to see the city sights), but put them on your list for your return visit.

Mom, sorry I didn't see this. I would have stayed in Austin but there's really no wrong answer here.
If you ever have a question about this area (Austin/SA) please feel free to email me if you still have my email. I don't check here that often as no one listens to my advice!
I hope whatever you did, there was a pool involved. Also, if you come again, I do have 2 teens and maybe we could meet you somewhere.

Hi FYB!
We ended up not going - we drove to Waco on Friday to see Baylor and I convinced my husband not to drive down to Austin or SA - it is a holiday weekend - we have been traveling a lot in June - and I really wanted to stay home. He agreed when I pleaded the financial aspect of it even with using points. I would like to drive down when the weather is more pleasant in the fall. I do not have your email any longer that I know of - so please do email me at the gmail account so I have it for the future.

MomDDTravel, I haven't been on Foders in a while and was just curious how you like DFW area? And TX of course. Our son is going to college in Dallas and he moved there from CA. Actually quite a few of his high school friends are choosing TX colleges these days. CA schools have gotten so expensive.
As you know I grew up in Dallas and all of my family is still there, so a big part of me loves the city. You do need to get settled in and meet people. Kids sure help with that, between school functions, their friends families, sports, and church.
Do you live in Grapevine by chance? That used to be a bait and tackle town when I was living there. Now it is quite the destination place.
Anyway, just wondering after ten months if you are enjoying the move and the locale...

Hi Heavens!
I wonder which one of the great colleges in the area your son decided on? The schools here are still pretty pricey. I recently applied to UTA so we shall see what happens...
I do not live by Grapevine - we live in Plano area and are moving to the Lewisville area in the fall when our home is done -
LOVE:
My daughter's school- awesome private school unlike anything in our area of S. California.
The cost of living! Cannot beat it - esp. when you compare it to S. California coastal area
The people - super friendly and welcoming
Dislike:
Weather. Blech. HOT HOT HOT.
My Mom and Stepdad being close by. Awesome. They live in Oklahoma and it is a few hour drive.
A wise Fodorite told me how much I would miss the water and boy was she right! I can really see us buying a boat as our budget would allow and taking advantage of the many lakes. I would love to buy a lake house eventually.
Truth is I do like it here, I am a loner of sorts by nature - so the friend thing has not been a home run for me. But I have a new job that I am loving and trying to get back into RN school.
If I could unload my house in CA I would be a lot less stressed out - and if my dil, son and beautiful grandchildren lived here - it would be perfect
Thank you for asking
