Taxis..San Francisco info

Can they stop for you in the street or do you need to call or go to a taxi stand and how difficult are they to get?
I am going from the area near the Stanyan hotel to fishermans wharf; need to arrive about 1030am. Also, how strict are they about the no. of passengers, we are 3 adults, 2 babies and 2 skinny kids.
Thanks.

Cabs are allowed to stop for you, but I would call a cab from the Stanyan Park Hotel. Tell them that you need a minivan. SF has several big cab companies, yellow cab, de soto, veterans, are 3 that come to mind. You might be able to flag a cab down once you are at Fisherman's Wharf. It's a more populated area. But just in case, bring a cab company phone # with you. Downtown is the only area that I would have some confidence that I could flag a cab.

Have a great trip!

Hello hellokitie, I have never had a problem hailing a cab in SF. Stand at a corner and be willing to step off the corner with a raised hand. But with the number of people you will have you will no doubt need two taxis or as franny suggested a minivan which you would need advance reservations for I would think. I cannot imagine your being able to get a minivan as you would a taxi (no reservation). Enjoy your time in beautiful SF!

You will not be able to flag a cab near the Stanyan Park--it is in a predominately residential neighborhood and cabs do not cruise the streets in SF's residential neighborhoods. So have hotel call a cab OR you could actually take public transporation for far less by walking up hill 2 blocks from hotel and catching N Judah. You can get off at any below ground downtown stop and take the above ground F srteetcar tothe Wharf.

20 minutes or so, depending on traffic and whether you hit lights.

The N technically takes about 15mins to get from Stanyan to say Powell Street and F takes about 20 mins to get to the Wharf from there. But these times don't take into account waiting time. I would guestimate at least 50 mins. Yes, taking a cab will quicker.

If line F is packed, and usually it is, may be difficult to get on with 2 babies and strollers.
