It will be interesting to see how this all works out as we don't see anyway to come back before '09.
Sorry to hear some already turned to vandalism of passengers belongings. The ferry prices alone were restrictive without the threat of being the target of some misguided juvenile.
It's too bad the missionaries didn't make use of mirrors maybe this all would be seen in a different light.

I just say that with sarcasm. I just wish it would leave Hawaii.
Before this fiasco, I couldn't care less about the Superferry. If it succeeded, that would have been OK. If it failed, that would have been OK.
But now after they operated knowing that the Hawaii Supreme Court has said that it was wrong for them to get an EA, and after knowing even more about the sweetheart deal, I hope it fails & goes on its way to somewhere else.
I won't ever take a trip on it.

According to the article in today's Honolulu-Advertiser:
"The U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration wanted assurances from the state that no environmental assessment be required for harbor improvements for Hawai'i Superferry because delays to harbor access could put its loan guarantees at risk."
Full article is here:

And in case anyone's interested, this Kaua`i resident is TOTALLY opposed to the SuperFerry coming to our island.

Dusty,
Fair enough! We all have our opinions.
The next week promises to be very interesting to say the least and I'll miss it because I'll be in Chicago on business. I'm sure the problem will still be here when I return, lol
Aloha!

I'm still not sure where I stand on the ferry. I do know that both sides are playing dirty, and I hope Kauai doesn't suffer any unintended consequences from the protesters' actions.
My problem with the discussions though, is that the whole "environmental issue" just doesn't ring true. What will the superferry bring that hasn't been brought in on barges, cruise ships, personal boats, and airplanes?
The coqui got here all the way from Puerto Ricowithout the help of any ferry. I'm guessing that whales get hurt when whale watchers make unpredictable approaches...a big ferry following a straight path will give them time to react and evade the ferry, wouldn't it?? Has a barge or cruise ship ever hit a whale??
Somehow, I fell like the real fear of Kauai and Maui residents is that the SF will change things ON their islands..more traffic, more people arriving fully equipped to compete for camping spots, surf breaks, etc. But aren't a lot of people already sending trucks ann camping equiptment over via Young Bros? How many cars per day will the SF actually bring?
Will there really be that many MORE people arriving, or just the same number, but arriving in a different way? I hate to fly, so I would take the ferry over flying any day, but I don't think I'd come any more often just cuz the ferry is there....
These are questions that I haven't heard anwers to, so if an EA is the way to achieve that, then one should be done. But what if the EA says the SF won't change anyting? Will those protesting say it was rigged, or accept it?
Personally, I don't see the SF making a whole lot of changes. I predict it will last 18 months, then it will head for Seattle or Vancouver and go to work there. Just about the same time that one of our three airlines fold, and once again, we'll have $150 air tix to deal with. ;-(

lcuy, you just don't get it, do you?
It's ok for the protesters to move to Kauai from Oahu or the mainland. It's ok for them to cut down trees and build on Kauai. It's ok for them to ship over household goods on Matson barges, risking introduction of invasive species. It's ok for them the buy cars and clog Kauai's roads. It's just not ok for anyone else in Hawaii to do so.
After all, they probably moved to Kauai a whole year before the ferry started operating. That gives them the right to keep everyone else out, including Native Hawaiians who might want to visit the island.
Mongoose, shmongoose . . . we all know this is about keeping other Kamaaina out of Kauai.

That may be true for some of them, benny, but my husband has tons of clients on Kauai and many of the ones who are anti-ferry are long time (2nd or 3rd generation) residents.
Just hope both sides can settle back and work it out peacefully and legally.
Let's not try to turn this into a racial/locals/malihini thing. Lots of variety of people on both sides of the argument, even here in Fodorville. I mean look at even calm, helpful Dusty gettin' all riled up. Who'd have known??
Besides, I'm on Oahu, and I'm not terribly excited to think of hoardes of neighbor islanders coming here in their cars to snap up all the good deals at Ala Moana, enlarge our potholes, and get ahead of me in line for Malaekahana permits either!!

Sorry to hijack this thread, but since we have sort of mentioned racial slurs: do any of you find the word "Moke" racially offensive? I used that word in my blog today in passing and some nut wrote a letter to the editor slamming me for using a racially derogatory term. I was like, WHUT? I didn't even use it to describe anyone in derogatory terms.

To the other posters - sorry if I mislead anyone. I'm NOT saying it's ok to protest (or not) depending on how long you lived here. I'm saying the opposite. You built your home last year? Thirty years ago? Yesterday? What's the difference?
The car a 40-year resident (or third generation resident) drives on Kauai makes just as much pollution as the car driven by a visitor who arrived yesterday. So why is it ok for them (the protestors) to move to Kauai, *whenever* they did so, but nobody else? What special rights do they have to dictate to the rest of Hawaii who can move there (actually, just visit) and who can't? My car will cause traffic jams but, theirs does not?
The only racial exception to me are natives. Yes, I do believe they have special right to protest because many have been protesting the influx of outsiders, and the development of the land, since before statehood.
But everybody else (not native), including myself, are part of the problem. Don't be pointing fingers at someone else and think they're the problem when we should be pointing fingers at ourselves (including you people on Kauai).

bennyb, no apology needed, your comments aren’t misleading. both you and dusty have valid arguments. you're right, it doesn't matter when kauai residents showed up.
i don’t know what generation i am, probably should but why? so i qualify for hawaiian homes, so i qualify for kamehameha, so i carry an oha card. so, i’m a trustee/beneficiary to property in waipio valley. property came when the king divided the bi in a twenty sliced pie to each chief, so tutu claims. i’m not allowed to sell. i’m sure there are loopholes, but i’ve been “asked” not to sell and to keep it in the family. everyone else obviously sold out and went to vegas, who knows? who cares? you’re one of very very few…
all i know is you can’t stop change. i’m actually looking forward to a superwalmart. all the problems the protesters are crying about are already here!
as far as the superferry goes, i could care less. as long as the road to nawiliwili is widened, since i frequently use to/fro work. an ea/eis can change it. superferry/dot whoever, has been dodging left/right, when energy/monies/time could’ve been spent to do it right the first time.
but that’s just my opinion!
still a moke.

For my racial dilemma, check out my blog at www.myadvertiser.com/kakaako and tell me if I was way off. It's all in context!
For the superferry issue: Interesting point, benny. I have some friends/coworkers who are native Hawaiian and enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities, and were looking very forward to using the superferry (especially the one who has a fear of flying). They're angry and offended at the protestors. They're thinking, "So you like the cruise ships coming in, full of tourists, to crowd your island. You like the airplanes coming in, full of tourists, to crowd your island. You let the real estate developers come in. But me, I'm one of YOU....and you're telling me I cannot come to visit?!" And then I heard many of the points you brought up, plus some others. Lots of hurt feelings, lots of consternation.
Just call me sistah!
