Super 8 Hotel

Can anyone tell me what it is like exactly. What is around this hotel that looks familiar, so when we arrive I can look for it. We are coming in from Newark airport July 14-18. The Super 8 hotel was the cheapest thing I could find. I have stayed at the St. Moritz and Sheraton, so I know what those hotels are like on the inside, but is the Super 8 hotel safe and clean enough. Also what is the best way for us to get to NYC from Newark airport. No luggage just our carry on bag. I can't wait. Oh I forgot we are celebrating my niece's 16th birthday. What restaurant would be nice to go to for lunch or dinner and is not too expensive. Also what play is good for a teenager. One more thing can she get into any talk shows. Thanks again for all your help.

Look for reviews of the hotel on tripadvisor.com If you want better answers, tell us where it is

Best way to get to NYC from Newark airport depends on how many people you are and where the hotel is. There's a combination of trains that puts you into Penn station in NYC. I think your hotel is near there so would be convenient but don't know what the price would be. If there are more than 2 of you, someitmes it's just as cheap to take a cab or shuttle service. This website lists all the options

http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/egtsfram.htm

There are thousands of restaurants depending on what sort of food, neighborhood etc.

Rent is a show popular with teens and is available at the TKTS booth or on one of the discount websites like playbill.com, theatermania.com

Don't know about talk shows but if you do a search here for specific ones (like Regis) there's info. I think you have to write ahead of time.

Hello Lizzy,
I stayed at the Super 8 in May (I'm assuming you mean the one on 59 West 46 St.)
I was very happy with our stay there. It is very clean and comfortable. Of course the rooms are not particularly fancy being a more economy hotel, but I could find absolutely nothing to complain about. The lobby is neat though, it has alot of character (you'll see). There is a free breakfast for guests every morning in the basement which was a great bonus. (Fruit, bagels, toast, coffee, tea, juice).

It is located right in the Diamond District, and only a couple of blocks to Times Square. Rockefeller Centre is right around the corner from it. The location is excellent, walking distance to many sites including the Theater Disctrict, Restaurant Row, the Public Library and the Empire State Building. It won't be hard to find, when in doubt, ask someone, that's what we did and all New Yorkers we encountered were friendly and helpful.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Have a fabulous trip to NYC!

It's been a year or so since I flew into Newark, but they have bus service from the airport that goes to the bus terminal in Midtown...41st & 8th? It is walking distance to the Super 8 albeit through Times Square.

Thanks, I am relieved because I have stayed at Super 8's motel 6's in Chicago which were fine for my husband and I I was just kinda of worried, because I haven't been to NYC enough times to remember locations of hotels, like I do when I go to chicago every year. I am sure it is safe. In the past I never felt like I wasn't safe in NYC and we walked all over. Now I feel much better. I can't wait to get there now.

Lizzy, glad you are looking forward to the trip. When we were there, on several nights we did not make it back to the hotel until 1:00-2:00 am and I never felt the least bit unsafe. Of course common sense comes into play but yes, the Super 8 is in a very safe area. There were always lots of people out, no dark alleys or anything like that to contend with.

If you need to get from Newark Airport into the city the fastest way is the train that takes you directly to Union Station, fast and easy way. My daughter who lives in the city does this when she flys.

Union station is in other cities but not NY The train goes to Penn station at 34th st. It isn't far from the hotel but is a bit of a walk (more than 10 blocks) with luggage.

Ha ha! Yes Lizzy, you WILL need a beer. That was one of my first missions too. There are several small lounges, restaurants and pubs within a couple of blocks of the Super 8. I'm sorry, I can't recall the names of any of them, but just familiarize yourself with the immediate area (lets say about a 2 block radius) and I'm sure you will spot something you like. I couldn't be any more envious right now!! This is me crying in my beer, boo hoo. Have a great time!!

Thanks I am sure I will find a Pub, if worst comes to worst I will grab one in the deli along the way. in 2001 my sisters and mom went to a play Cabaret and I walked to Macy's on 34st. for a couple of hours then returned to pick up my sisters at 46th, but weren't ready so I went to an Irish pub on the next block that I have been to before a couple of years before then with my husband. But this time I was alone and had fun just sitting there watching the mets on tv and even showed the bartender how to make a commaciaz shot. I may not have spelled the word right. It was fun just sitting there while they were at the show. I just love NYC. Thanks again for all your help.

I just returned from NY a few days ago. It was my first trip. What a great place! I saw Wicked and really enjoyed it. Before I bought the tix, I thought it might be somewhat "little kid-ish" like Beauty and the Beast. I bought the tix anyway because of the great reviews. I do not regret it at all. It wasn't little kid-ish in the least bit. The performers were amazing! I really, really enjoyed it. Also, Laura Bush and her daughters attended the night we saw it! I think your niece will enjoy it. You'll probably have to buy your tiz in advance though.

Ah, yes, when we were in NY it was an all girls trip also. (my best friend and her sister). I loved their company and we had a great time, but the few chances that I got to be alone and explore are the ones I really treasure!
Do you got some extra room in your luggage for me??

Not to change the subject but I am looking for views from Brooklyn and if so can I just walk over that bridge in the evening and take pictures from that side. Is it safe? Also, while was in Atlanta for one of my shopping trips in April, I ran across a waitress who was from Long Island and she said they have a really pretty beach on the Nrthshore I think that is what she said. Does anybody have any idea. Also does the subway go to Brooklyn. I know I am going to ask a really stupid question but it is above or below the water. Also that train that you can take from the Newark airport is that like a monarail above the ground. I am leaving wednesday morning. Can't Wait!! Thanks to everyone for all your help.

Yes Lizzy you can walk the Brooklyn Bridge and it is safe. There are various ways to get to the Brooklyn side including Subway and a really cool option is the Water Taxi, especially if it is hot outside, being on the water seems to cool you down a bit.

Don't know anything about the beach at Long Island sorry.
Have a wonderful trip.

Long Island has a bunch of beaches. I'm not aware of any especially beautiful beaches on the North Shore - these are usually pebbles vs sand - and in any case most of them are town beaches open to residents only. For a beautiful public beach go to Jones Beach state park - on the south (ocean) shore of the Island.

After I had a few disappointments staying at a Super 8 Motel I determined to never stay in one again. Ditto Days Inn, Ramada, La Quinta, and Travelodge.

Lizzie, pubs in the area of the Super 8:
Walk down 46th Street towards Times Square and you will come upon Rosie O'Gradys Times Square, and just a bit further one of my favorites - O'Lunneys. On 47th Street, directly behind both of these is another favorite - Langan's.

Hi to everyone,

I got back from NYC last monday the trip was fine and the Super 8 was fine except for the first morning after we woke up. We had a creature crawling in our room if you know what I mean, so that morning we rushed to get our bags out and go down to the front desk to let them know. There explanation for that was they are destroying a building behind the super 8, so I guess the those things are just running everywhere, we also saw one in the subway. But anyway they gave us 20% off and moved us to the front building, so if you are planning to stay there it is fine as long as you get a room that take you up on the elevator right across from the front desk, after that we were fine. Also if you want ask for a room number like 706 or one with the 06 behined it, because on every floor like 406, 506 and so those rooms were much bigger and you can request a ice box too. Make sure when you go to check in to ask for a room in the front building if nothing is ready then put your bags in storage and go site seening then come back in and check in later. But thanks for all the help. We went to see two plays, Hair Spray and Mama Mia. We did the lottery at the theater. The only way to go if you are trying to save money. We got to town on a wednesday and started walking around and we stumbled across Hair Spray, which you can't even get tickets at the TKTO ticket ticket booth in Time Square. They do a lottery like at 5:30pm and draw names for 2 tickets per person at 6:00pm and the tickets 25.00 each which were great for us. On the top row, but the view was fine. And after intermission you can go sit wherever there is an open sit. On Sat. We started waiting for standing room ticket for 21.95 at 3:30 pm and we were the first ones and then the line grew and grew, but your whole group has to be there to purchase the tickets. One per person, but it was fine because where you stand they had a number on a gold plate and you stand in that spot, that is yours and only yours, but if you spot some seat then after intermission you can go grab one. It was great because I was able to drink my beer and eat my candy while the people who had seats could drink. That was the best part of the whole thing was drink and watch the #1 play in NYC all that for 21.95, plus the beers were 5.00, but still I save 100.00 on a seat.
