Will stay for 2 nights in NYC end of august. Read some good critics about the Wyndham suites (tripadvisor and other travelguides in Europe). Hotel suggests very attractive rate 199 USD + tax for 1 bedroom suite. However do not find critic in Fodors ... Anyone can help ?

Please specify the address of the hotel you're talking about: there are several hotels in the Wyndham chain in NYC, as well as an independent hotel of that name, at 42 W 58 Street.

I've stayed at the latter -- excellent location, huge but threadbare rooms, terrible food, arrogant staff, broken heater. No desire to return, ever.

To my knowledge there is no Wyndham suites hotel in NYC proper. There is a Wyndham at one of the airports, in New Jersey (Newark I think-be careful you don't wind up in the wrong place!)

The independent Wyndham that anonymous mentions on w 58th st is one of the best kept secrets in NYC IMO. Yes it may be threadbare but the location can't be beat for the money. I don't know how good their air conditioning is which is mandatory for August.

If you're looking for a suite, try the Doubletree Suites (a good chain) in Times Square or look on the website affinia.com that is a group of all suite apt/hotels around the city. One of their most popular properties is the Shelburne Murray Hill.

42W 58 Street. Website www.hotelwyndham.com . Not a hotel from the Wyndham chain, but seems to be a very good location. No restaurant, but as I like a very good breakfast to start the day, I do hesitate to book at this hotel.

Yes Jan, this is the place I think is a great value and Anonymous thinks is awful. It's more a European type place-older furnishings, no luxury but great, convenient location. My friend who used to live in NYC around the corner from it recently stayed there on my recommendation and couldn't believe he'd never known about it. I've had English relatives stay there happily. But don't think you're getting an American style hotel. For $199 I actually think you can do better. Not sure what they're promising. I do think many rooms have kitchenettes so you could have breakfast in the room. And I wouldn't worry about breakfast. NY is filled with inexpensive delis and coffee shops where you'll find a better breakfast that at a discount hotel. Le Parker Meridien hotel is right nearby and has a restaurant called Norma which is considered one of the best places in the city for breakfast (not cheap).

My only worry would be how good the air conditioning is. If you want that neighborhood and a 1 bedroom suite, I suggest checking the Salisbury. I don't have any personal experience with it but it gets fairly consistent good reviews on tripadvisor
