Subway to Brooklyn Bridge

I'm staying on Fifth Avenue and 40th. I take the 4 or 5 subway to which stop. then take the A or C to which stop?

Sorry I forgot to say where I wanted to go. I want to walk the Brooklyn Bridge from the Brooklyn side to Manhattan.

Frankly, i think it would just be easier to walk west crosstown three blocks and get the A or C train at 42nd and 8th Avenue. Take the downtown A or C to High Street in brooklyn. you'll be right by the bridge.

Then, when you reach the Manhattan side, you'll be right by the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall stop of the 4 and 5 subways.
