KY Derby Hotel - Big Mistake?

I have just booked the Red Carpet Inn in Louisville (S. Hurstbourne Pkwy) for the KY Derby, and I just want to know if anyone has had any experience with this property. My reasons for booking this place are the same reasons that are causing me some concern that it might be a complete roach motel. A) It's right in Louisville and was only $142.00 / night, B) It still had availability. When I called the hotel, the receptionist said that it was in the better part of town, but she also said that she "didn't want to talk bad about her job". Now, I find out that they don't even have a website of their own...BUT, according to the BBB website, they have a satisfactory record (no complaints in the last 3 yrs). I'm not expecting any luxuries, I just want to know what I'm in for. Any information would be much appreciated!

Thanks!
Lisa

I am not familiar with this hotel but try searching on www.tripadvisor.com for reviews of hotels and maybe that will help.

I think at this point if you found a room you are very lucky. Rooms fill up sometimes a year in advance for the Derby.

Other than the location, I know nothing about the hotel except it has been the Red Carpet for years-? if ever renovated?? It is in a perfectly safe area of town. Hurstbourne is renowned for its bumper to bumper traffic almost anytime except Sunday morning, but you will be close to every chain restaurant known to man and a fairly easy drive to Churchill Downs (leave early as the the traffic to the Downs will be brutal on both Derby and Oaks Day)
It is not unusual to still find some rooms at this time of year-but the selection is getting slimmer and the price for Derby is always off the charts.

Thanks for the responses! charsuzan, you have put my fears to rest. I was having a hard time believing that I was able to get such a reasonable rate on a hotel that was actually in a civilized area! I'm looking forward to the trip!

Hurstbourne is a fine area of town, but the traffic is atrocious as mentioned.

I can only comment from *many* years ago -- the Red Carpet Inn was kind of a dump known as the place for teen-agers to party. That was 10 years ago, and at Derby I imagine it's full of tourists and not teens. You're lucky to have found a room in Louisville, so hopefully it will be clean and no worries.

Enjoy Derby!

Thanks Gekko! We were at the Derby last year, but stayed with a friend. Our group has grown from 2 to 4, so we opted for a hotel this time. We can deal with the traffic (I won't be driving!)...just glad to hear that it's a decent area! Thanks for the input!
