Stratosphere advice
My two buddies and I will be on a business/pleasure trip to Vegas soon. We will be staying at the Stratosphere, mainly due to our company picking up the tab!!!
I understand the hotel is a distance from the main strip, so I am looking for advice on:
Best ways to get to and from this hotel to the strip?
Should we explore downtown casinos?
Anyone who was able to snag a free room upgrade here?
Any advice on a midweek 1/2 day trip to Red Rock Canyon, (thinking of renting a car, bike?)
Any other information about the hotel, etc. that can make this trip more enjoyable is most appreciated. Thank you.

Wow...the Stratosphere is not the nicest place, it has really gone down hill.
You can walk to the nearest monorail stop and take the monorail to the strip. It is a walk of a few blocks.
Downtown doesn't hold too much to do. If this is your first time, spend your time on the main strip. So much to see!
Red Rock canyon was cool - rent a car. We did a horseback ride there - pretty sweet!
Good luck!

My friends, who stayed at the Strat last year, used The Deuce bus. It was $5.- for a 24 hour pass. They said it took about 10 minutes to go to the center strip, and about the same to go Downtown. They added that the buss ran pretty often. See website for details:

I stayed there last year - same budget reasons. The room was fine. I liked the breakfast restaurant. The dinner buffet was okay. We had one dinner at the top but I'm not sure it was worth it but it was my first time in a revolving restaurant. We also enjoyed watching the daredevils go on some of the rides at the top. You should definitely visit the other hotels. I took a trolley that goes down the strip. There are several stops. The trolley picks up at the rear entrance to the Strat. There's another registration area that handles tours and buses. We were fortunate that my conference made discounted tickets to Le Reve available. That's a great show. We took a cab back to the Strat. If you are attending a convention that has its own shuttle buses you can simply visit other hotels via the shuttle bus and return later via cab.

I've stayed at the Strat twice. It was decent enough--especially if you're on a budget...We took the bus to get to the strip. There's a bus stop right out front. You may wait a while sometimes but for $5 a day it was worth it. I'd check downtown out one night. It was fun and the light show was cool.
