Still rainy in San Diego
I'm going to be visiting San Diego this weekend (Fri-Mon). I picked SD because I heard the weather is always nice. Now I hear its been raining heavily for a long time! Any idea if it will be raining this weekend? Any suggestions on "what to do in San Diego when its raining"?
THANK YOU

This particular nasty storm is clearing out starting tomorrow-- they say. As they missed the onset day by 48 hours (it was supposed to hit shore Tuesday, and actually made land Thursday), nothing seems to be following rules. The last weather forecast I saw for the LA area said this weekend should be relatively clear, with a slight chance of showers. SD should have similar weather. Have you checked the 10-day forecast on weather.com? Maybe things will calm down. This is the worst El Niño winter I've been through.
Rainy day in SD? Museums in Balboa Park are nice. Various shopping venues, of course. Even with an umbrella, a stroll in La Jolla Village is very pleasant.

The tv weather a couple of days ago said that a new storm might be here by the weekend, but, as rjw said, they seem to be running behind schedule, so who knows? The current forecast for Saturday and Sunday is "cloudy".
Our local dam at Lake Hodges just began overflowing. The whole reservoir was almost empty, at about 17% capacity, and it has refilled in the last six weeks. It's now a big tourist attraction!
You know it NEVER rains in Southern California!

This is now the 3rd wettest year in San Diego history (records kept since 1850). The rains started last October after we went over 180 days with no rain (also a record). They are calling for a dry cloudy weekend, but more rain might be on its way next week. Alice is right -we've had breaks in the rain. Bring an umbrella just in case.

Wow, we've had tons of rain here in San diego all month (for several months)! My advice is, make flexible plans for each day, a sunny-day plan plus a rainy-day option. Then get up early and if it's sunny, you better get out there, because we've had days in the past couple of months where it's only sunny until noon and then it's cloudy!
So while you're here if there's sun get out in it right away. Just have alternate plans if it gets cloudy or rainy.
Today (Thursday) was a great day, by the way, with lots of sun lasting until the late afternoon!
I don't recommend sleeping in, because as I mentioned you might miss most of the sunny time by doing that. Get up early and get to bed early.
Bring a back-pack with you with a change of clothes, and umbrella. Dress in layers...a t-shirt, a sweatshirt or sweater, and a waterproof windbreaker or waterproof jacket.
What to do when it's raining? We have lots of good restaurants! Bring your list of good places to eat.
Balboa Park has lots of museums and the Reuben H. Fleet Science Museum/space theatre.
See if you can see a play at the Old Globe Theatre, also in Balboa Park...
How do you plan to get around? Driving in the rain is pretty dangerous even for us locals, but even more so if you're a tourist...
My favorite movie theatre is the AMC Mission Valley theatre, as it has the best sound combined with the fact that it doesn't have any dinky size theatres, they are all either mid-size or large. Plus if it's raining you can eat at Ruby's diner, right next to the theatre, they have good burgers, and they have added light fries to the menu, we like them better than the regular fries, and they have a great chocolate/peanut butter (reese's) milkshake...Great banana shake too. It's kinda like a 50's style diner. They are fast too, even when the line is out the door they still seat us and feed us (if you eat fast) in about 40 minutes total!!! Lots of movie-goers eat there. In the same shopping center is an Outback Steakhouse with steak, prime rib, and seafood if you prefer.
