Staying in Sausalito or San Francisco (what area in SF if I stay there?)
Hi
I just spoke to a friend who is very familiar with SF.
She suggested I consider staying in Sausalito and I thought I'd see what the general opinion here may be.
I have five nights after Yosemite and had planned on one night in wine country and then the last four nights in San Francisco, flying home from there.
I will have a car. Much of what I want to do on this stay in SF is take interesting photos (some iconic shots, some regular street photos etc). And wander streets much like I do when I visit any city - walk walk walk, some cafes to people watch and eat/drink, bookshops, window shop, some museums, etc. It would be nice to have good dining options (which doesn't have to be expensive) each evening. Some place outdoors, a view, good wine, etc. I haven't sussed out how to get home from SF if I have dinner in SF but am staying in Sausalito - IE will it be with my car or by boat, etc.
And where would the good nightlife be? I don't mean raves! A nice bar, music, etc? Is Sausalito OK for that or pretty quiet? I don't want to be asleep after dinner, I want to do some interesting evening walks, too.
So I am trying to think of a good location to stay given all I want to see. If I stay in Sausalito I am better positioned for visiting places north of the city as well as the Marin Headlands for foggy shots. Assuming I'm not already IN SF when the fog rolls in. I know I want to visit Muir Woods and Point Reyes during my time in this area.
I will probably do the 49 mile scenic drive - the last time I did that was a LONG time ago and I had a crappy camera.
I'd like to either walk or bike the GG bridge, too.
And I might want to go to Big Sur one day as well via the PCH.
Thank you for any thoughts...

I never stay outside a city I'm visiting if there is a choice in the city. Sausalito is very nice town, but it's not San Francisco. I'd stay in San Francisco and visit the other places, not the other way around. Since you'll have a car, access to the other places (including the GG Bridge) will be easy.

Parking is a big consideration - which is why stu recommended Lombard street. The motels along and near there often offer free parking.
Cow Hollow Inn
Coventry Inn
Lombard Motor Inn
Presidio Travelodge (not the other travelodge on Lombard St)
