I stayed there 2 years ago, and am sorry to say, I found it a terrible place. The rooms were old and musty, the beds very uncomfortable, the casino area is cramped and extremely smoky, and service non-existant. Also, because the casino is a couple of streets away from Fremont Street, the walk home was a little scary, although nothing happened. Maybe other people will have better opinions, but I would try to find a better hotel, if its not too late. I'm sure you got an excellent price, but you will see why when you get there. Personally, I think the strip is a much better area to stay in, but lots of people feel downtown has a special charm.
I hope, and believe, you will find Americans friendly, and Vegas can be a very fun and exciting town. Sorry for the bad review, but felt I had to say something after my terrible experience. There are hotels like the Orleans that are inexpensive and just a few blocks off the strip. They run shuttle buses back and forth to the strip if you don't rent a car. Finally, you might check out the website www.cheapovegas.com for detailed reviews of every hotel in Vegas.

I don't think you should be overly concerned about safety, baggieboy. Just protect your purse and wallet as you would any crowded place, and if the walk back to the hotel at night is a worry, just hop in a taxi. I've been to Vegas many times and the ONLY time I was worried was then, and it was probably after midnight at that. There are so many things to do in Vegas, you will be out and about most of the day, and having a great time at that. There are many free shows available all over, incredible ticketed shows like O and Mystere, great buffets (I love the Bellagio one), and of course, lots of gambling and shopping. I hope you have an wonderful trip. the El Cortez should hopefully give you one of their better rooms since you're staying so long.Don't be afraid to ask if the first room is not to your liking.

In case you get a little homesick while in Vegas, I have to recommend the Crown and Anchor. It is fabulous! Located near the intersection of Tropicana/Maryland Pkwy. it is a nice pub. Grab a pint, throw a few darts and eat some bangers and mash or a sausage roll! We love the Crown and Anchor!!

Yes I "actually" live in Vegas. Well, now I live in Henderson, but it's all the same. P.S. My mom is from England (Peterborough).

The Village Pub in Henderson is good, they make great fish and chips! It is not like the Crown and Anchor and not like a real British pub, but it is good. I have a cousin that lives in Birmingham. He is a cartoonist for "the Beano" magazine. I hope you enjoy your time here. When are you coming?
