st Simon Island - nearest major airport?
We have been invited to a wedding there at the end of Oct and I am trying to determine which airport to fly to from STL.
I did realize Atlanta is over 5 hours away....
The inns and Hotels on line are gorgeous but many start at $400 for off season!! I hope to find a nice one by the weekend to make a reservation..If anyone has ideas I would loveit! Thanks.

Savannah or Jacksonville. It's a toss-up, but I usually find better fares into Jax. Definitely NOT Atlanta! Much too far away.
Sorry, I can't help you with lodging except to say that SSI is just across the sound from (and is considered part of) Brunswick. Surely you can find some decent chain motels there.

Sounds as though you are going the weekend of October 27. If so, you are bidding against a slew of football fans who will stay at St. Simons and attend (if they wake up in time) the GA-FLA football game in Jacksonville, FL. Normally, you would have no problem finding rooms for less than $200 on the island after Labor Day [The King and Prince web site shows room rates around $160/night in October]. If that is the week you are going, hotels/motels along the I-95 and I-75 corridors will be bursting at the seams also.
I suggest the wedding be rescheduled.

Jacksonville and Savannah are each about 1 1/2 hours away from St. Simon Island. Advantage to Jacksonville is that there are non-stop flights from STL. Know nothing about any college football game, but if there is a conflict, availability may be an issue. Southwest flies to JAX but not SAV - don't know if it is an option from STL.
Advantage to Savannah is that it is a great small airport, but flights involve one-stop.
Kayak.com is a great website to compare airports and fares.
Can't help with lodging.

I just tried to book the room at the Inn I mentioned - The person at the hotel said it was a minimum 3 night stay and the price was $289/night!! Ouch...
It seems there is an embassy Suite available at Brunswick - Is this a nice area? It seems like it is only about 20 min away is that accurate?
Thanks

If you'd like to stay on the beach, you might check out Jekyll Island which is just outside of Brunswick. They have a variety of accomodations. We generally stay at Villas by the Sea which are condos, but they have regular motels and the upscale Jekyll Island Club as well. Rates should be much lower than St. Simon's Island and more scenic than an Embassy Suites attached to a mall.

Try the Oceanside Inn and Suites on Jekyll. My favorite location - right on the beach. My parents stayed there recently in a newly redecorated room and they said it was lovely. I like Jekyll MUCH better than St. Simons - but I like natural, simpler things.
