I can't offer any first hand knowledge, but I do know from my recent digging in these forums for my upcoming trip to the area ....that the Don Cesar is considered the top resort in that area.
It's out of my price range, but looks and sounds like a fantastic place. Do a search of these boards for more info.

Hands down, the top resort is the Tradewinds in St Pete Beach. It's the acknowledged best resort along the beach with complete facilities. I'd place the Don CeSar as perhaps number two, but its facilities are not quite as diverse and the prices are usually a good bit higher. Good luck.

The Tradewinds may be the biggest (and more family oriented), but the Don is ritzier, more beautiful, an old grand dame classic. They are both Gulf-front on St. Pete Beach, officially a different town than St. Petersburg. In St. Petersburg, the Vinoy is the top resort, located on the downtown waterfront.

Wayne...good grief, acknowledged best by whom and in what regard?? No way on earth the Don is #2, especially not #2 to the Tradewinds!
That's almost funny! If you were to ask 100 people who live in the area what the nicest resort in St Pete Beach is, I'll wager that 99 of them would answer the Don.
It is expensive but if you can afford it, I'd say it's worth the extra money. Despite the fact that we lived in the area so rarely stay in the hotels, especially since my husband ran one of them, a 4* (in Tampa, not on the beaches) and we lived in it, when we wanted a very special place for our anniversary, it was the Don we chose. It is a lovely hotel, nice pools, spa, and pretty stretch of beach.

Hello
Since you are not getting much response, I will throw in my two cents. We stayed on Tampa Bay because it was just for one night, but I would stay on the beach in St. Petes. We drove over there, and there are so many hotels. Look on tripadvisor.com for some recent reviews.
