St. Louis for a night..is The Hill area a good place to stay?
My husband and I are lovers of all things Italian. We'll be stopping in St. Louis for a night after dropping our son off at college in South Bend Indiana. I know that Little Italy is in an area called "The Hill". Would that be a good place to find an older, quaint hotel? Any suggestions? We'd like to keep it around $150. if possible. I prefer non-chain hotels, older and with lots of personality. If not The Hill, where would you suggest?

I can't think of any hotels on The Hill, just a lot of good restaurants. The OMNI Majestic Hotel downtown St. Louis is nice and quaint. Is probably near the $ 150 rate. Downtown is really near The Hill. The last time I stayed at The Majestic is was not a part of the Omni chain.

Here are two other suggestions that I just thought of. An aquaintance mentioned it recently.
www.lafayetteparkbedandbreakfast
Also,www.hannahhouse.net
Both located in St. louis city. Are you familiar with lafayette Park? The architecture is gorgeous, and it has been lovingly restored. It is a historic area with great restaurants,etc.. I have suggestions if you need some.

The closest geographically you'll find to a hotel on the Hill, I think, would be Red Roof and Holiday Inn on the interstate, very low in charm and quaintness.
I'd go with the suggestions above, especially the Lafayette and Benton Park B&B's, and stroll around the Hill after supper. Lots of tidy shotgun houses with rose bushes in the yard.
Viviano's and DiGregorio Markets are good places to stock up on groceries, though Viviano's hardly ever plays Frank Sinatra or Italian opera since the younger generation took over. Missouri Baking Co is a tasty time travel bakery.
Best wishes for your son in South Bend.

I love the little historic villiage of St Charles. Tons of history and quaint shops. Check out: http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/misso...trail-inn.html I have never stayed there but you would love the area! You could explore the area and drive to The Hill for more exploration and dinner.

annesherrod, I meant to thank you for your recommendation for the Seven Gables Inn. We had a few clients come to St. Louis from DC, and we wanted them to stay somewhere nice, but also close to Wash U, where the meeting was located. We booked them into the Seven Gables Inn and they loved it! I never heard of it before your mentioning it on here, so I wrote it down in case I would need to give a recommendation. I just didn't realize I would need it so soon! They are booked there again for a few nights in October.
Thanks!
Tracy
