The drive to the North Rim is a slow one. If you get stuck behind a motorhome..it could even be slower! You are looking at anywhere from 7 - 9 hours of driving (round trip) if you are going to do this as a day trip from St. George. In October you are only going to have about 12 hours of daylight, so unless you like driving after dark, you will only have a couple of hours at the North Rim.
I don't know what other areas you will be visiting, but Zion National Park is just 45 miles away and would be a much better day trip. Also just north of St. George is Snow Canyon State Park.
