FYI - Lynn Redgrave is in the midst of chemo treatment...she wore a wig.
Sarah Jessica's dress was Tom (Mr. Bondage) Ford for Gucci. Bizarre!
Hugh Jackman is wearing extensions for a movie role. One fell out and he handed it to David Letterman last week on the Late Show.
Bernadette Peters as Mama Rose just does not make it in my book. She is too petite and not powerful enough as Ethel Merman, Rosalind Russell were. Bernadette will always be a cupie doll.

I don't know how anyone could watch that performance by Bernadette Peters and not call it powerful. My wife says it's the best VCR trigger finger I've ever pulled.
To give a performance like that in the context of the show, on stage, near the end of the show when you're engulfed in emotion and into the performance is one thing. But to go out on Tony night and step up and pull it off out of the blue like that is amazing. I'll bet she pulls off a helluva "Some People", too.

I was a bit disappointed in this years Tony's. The winners were totally predictable, except for Jane Krakowski pulling a win out of nowhere. You just knew that Hairspray, Long Days Journey, and Take me Out were going to walk away with the bulk of the awards. No real upsets. The one unfortunate thing was that Eddie Izzard, who was absolutely captivating in Joe Egg, had to go up against a pillar in the theater community, Brian Denehey. He stood no chance, and really, he was outstanding.
The eyebrow thing, that was Botox. You can pick it up immediately because their facial expressions are wooden and their eyebrows look as if they are glued on. I suspect Frank Langella went the same route. I saw him try to raise an eyebrow and a flash of pain went across is face.
Vanessa looked 10 years older because of that Little House on the Prairie costume. Who dressed her?!
The Nine number they chose was so obviously a showcase for Antonio, and they completely snubbed the 3 women that were also nominees. They should have picked a number (or a medley) that all 4 of them could have participated in. Disgraceful!
Hugh Jackman did okay, but since he is not a theater veteran, what lacked was any spontaneous theater banter between him and the nominees, presenters, and audience, whereas someone like Nathan Lane would have been quipping all night. No big deal, but no real humor either.
So, other than Bernadette's tremendous performance, I don't think I would have missed anything if I had just gotten the results on Yahoo the following day.

OK, I wasn't taking notes so I can't reconstruct eaxactly what Dennehy said about Izzard, and I invite others to correct my account where it goes wrong.
When he first got on stage to accept Best Actor in a Play, Dennehy noted that Izzard's speech would have been funnier up there than his was going to be, but later he stumbled in the context of the "gee-I'm honored just to be included in the list, X is fantastic, Y is amazing, Z is a legend, etc." When he came to Izzard, he stammered out something about gee, what a guy -- or what a ... whatever -- or maybe they should have a whole new category for Eddie. There was some head shaking and some more half-phrases, but it all came under the category of spotlighting Izzard as if transgendered rather than a transvestite and, above all, instead of saying anything about his acting.
If I knew that they were friends off stage, I would just figure Dennehy was just being a klutz in the intensity of the moment. But there weren't any reaction shots of Eddie at the time and later shots of Izzard didn't look particularly happy for whatever reason. Given other sexual identity themes running throughout the proceedings, it seemed odd at the least, but maybe this was just one more.

Hated SJP's dress--she couldn't keep from pulling it and adjusting it and I thought her banter with MB's was just plain annoying.

Really enjoyed all the dance numbers. Glad TT won it, but , boy is she heavy-footed.
Who can compare to VR onstage? She is in a class by herself.
I love Nine and have seen it with Raul Julia and Sergio Franchi,but agree that they should have selected another number. I was impressed with Antonio, though. Hope it comes to LA.

OK show with some good moments. I am now somewhat interested in seeing Hairspray. Although I wish HF would balance his comedic talents with his serious side. Torch Song Triology pulled no punches and now all he seems to do is fluff ( I love fluff, but he can do both).

Here I am in London, missing the Tonys this year. Hopefully a friend taped them for me to see when I return in August, but he has failed me the last two years. Meanwhile you people are a tease. I'm trying to figure out the full list of winners and so far haven't been able to find them on the internet. Need to try a little more.
Out of curiosity, what number did they do from NINE? And boy, they must have changed TAKE ME OUT a lot since I saw the world premiere here in London last July, when it was a decent production, but a lousy script. I had heard they did major rewrites, and I hope so, since the above comments seem to indicate it won best play.

I really enjoyed it. Watching Bernadette Peters perform was the highlight! I was hoping she would win the Tony but after missing so many Gypsy performances, I understand.
There was a good article in the NY Times this morning discussing the ticket sales of non-Tony winners. Apparently, Gypsy sales are extremely brisk inspite of no winners. Hairspray was very upbeat and entertaining. No surprise that it won as much as it did. I always enjoy watching the Tonys!

Not to beat a dead horse, but Lynn Redgrave is probably 10 years younger than Vanessa, and I would guess that the reason she looks 20 years younger is because she seems to have had quite a bit of cosmetic surgery done. That is definitely NOT a naturally aging Georgy Girl, whom she did play in the 60's, along with Michael Caine.

Just read that The Play what I Wrote closed due to no Tony award..too bad.It's probably an Off-Broadway piece, but it seems unless you are big production it's hard to have a decent run.

Hugh Jackman starred as Curly in the national tour of Oklahoma! and was nominated for an Olivier award for it. The only reason he did not play the role on Broadway was some Actors Equity rule that an American actor had to play the role. So it's not as though Hugh is inexperienced in the theater. I found him to be an excellent, classy host and thought him very attractive in his untraditional tux. If only his hair had been 2 or 3 inches shorter - extensions or not.
And good riddance to Nathan Lane - he plays the same character in everything he does. I didn't miss him for a second.

On the "Lynn Redgrave looks good" theme: I'd credit good skin and being more concerned with her looks (in general) than Vanessa for her relative youth. Makeup, sure. Surgery? I doubt it. Look at her in "Gods and Monsters", then compare with her appearance at the Oscars that year. She just knows how to put herself together. The fact she still looks good during chemo-- I say, more power to her!!

REALLY hate to disagree, but given her age & the very TAUT look which one cannot get with make up - she's been done. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) And especially after the shagging she took from her ex!
