So - Did anyone watch the Tony Awards?
 

Did you enjoy it? Do you want to see any of the plays that you might not have seen?
I really enjoy the Tony's more than the Oscars, they are so much more relaxed and have more humor.
I want to see Hairspray again now. And Gypsy~

The Tony Awards are still on in Seattle, to 11 PM PDT. Maybe we could work together. You tell me who wins. Then I'll take bets from my friends here and get rich!

It was great to watch since I'm going in July and have my Hairspray tickets in hand. It will be my first visit to Broadway and now I'm all excited(as if I wasn't before the show). I need to choose another one to see. The song, The Impossible Dream gave me goose bumps and I'm interested in the Long Journey into Night. My husband and I decided we need to move to New York so, we could see them all. It was great to see the actors that accepted their awards that we will actually see when we go.I do have to thank this forum again for helping me to decide on Hairspray as a choice.

It was a tremendous production. YES made me want to leave today and see them all. You lucky people!

Glad I wasn't the only one to (still) get chills from "Impossible Dream" -- thought it was only overdone nostalgia on my part. But it certainly was another era....

What was Brian Dennehy's problem with Eddie Izzard? I HOPE that was genuine fond teasing, but good grief it seemed clumsy! I love Izzard, have seen all tapes available of his shows and even forgave him for being in "The Cat's Meow." Reviews of "Joe Egg" seemed to be decent, and he WAS nominated. I mean, cross-dressing was hardly an "outré" (nice pun, I thought) issue on last night's show.

Question for anyone who has seen all the major shows: Is Hairspray that much better than, say, Movin' Out or the other musicals? I was personally disappointed Movin' Out didn't get more recognition (great dress on Twyla Tharp), but I haven't seen the current versions of the other shows. If I go to NY in early August, is that the one show I should see?

I loved the Tony Awards! They are so much fun and it's great to see little bits from different musicals and plays. I saw Hairspray in March (and LOVED it) and was so excited with all the wins! I want to see it again.

I thought Brian Stokes Mitchell was FANTASTIC last night when he sang--made me want to see Man of La Mancha. I also think Gypsy would be terrific. I would also love to see Long Days Journey into Night now.

I thought Sarah Jessica Parker's dress was tacky. She's so beautiful and she and Matthew were quite cute with their parts, but that was tacky. So many of the other ladies looked fabulous in their beautiful gowns.

I mentioned this on a different thread, but will say it again - When the actor sang "Impossible Dream" I was moved. Wow.

The best acceptance speech? Of course by the two men/partners (who kissed) for Hairspray!

We have tix for Hairspray in August. Can't wait. I too now want to see another play. Maybe Gypsy?

RE: Saras dress...I liked it for her. She carried it off pretty well, and that is so Right! "See, I got it back after the baby" :)
Also-I noticed someone else wearing the "Bondage" look in their dress, it might have been just the style of the night~
I used to see all Twyla Tharps ballets when Barishnykov danced in them, but I don't especially like her stuff anymore. I thought there was something strange about her last night, did anyone else notice?

while all of this is so individual-I think Hairspray might be better than Movin, but then they are so different from one another. I do know that I want to see Hairspray again.
I think Eddie Izzard is brilliant and really think Denehy was just being clumsy.

1. Yes, Hairspray is that good, a highly entertaining feel good show, with some marvelous performances.
2. Brian Dennehy was joking.
3. No one has mentioned Vanessa Redgrave's dignity in her acceptance speech. She was luminous....as she certainly is in Long Day's Journey into Night.
4. Couldn't they have selected a better number to do from Nine?
5. Bernadette Peters' performance was electric!
6. Why Hugh Jackman? (I know, I know, the producers hoped his name would attract more young viewers.)

What smile?? And as the best choreographer, I have never seen a less graceful person - she bounded up to the stage like a teenage field hockey player.

Vanessa Redgrave's acceptance speech was a delight - she seemed so sincere. But who dressed her? A most unflattering potato sack.

And what about that old woman that is the head of the Amercian Theater Wing! Her eyebrows were a full six inches above her eyes!

That was it! I could not see clearly, but Twyla Tharp had to have been the most UNgraceful woman walking last night! Why? And yes, she has a hard time getting a smile out :)
Howard, I agree! Hugh Jackman is cute but someone like Nathan Lane, an entertaining Broadway actor would have been great!
I saw Nine with Raoul Julia and this one suffers in the comparison for me.
The teeny lady that Frank Langella carried off the stage had more than strange eyebrows going on there, but I will control my bitchiness :)
and to finish myself off here, I might be the only person on the planet to admit this ... BUT...I have never liked Vanessa Redgrave. Maybe she was ok in Georgy Girl, but her politics turned me off so much, I never could get to like her..

Sorry, Scarlett, but you've got your Redgraves mized up. That was Lynn in Georgy Girl.
I, too, don't approve of some of Vanessa Redgrave's politics. Still, I would not let that deprive me of seeing of the great actresses of our time give one of the great performances of our time.
