Shuttle transfer between LGA and JFK

We (2) need to transfer between LGA and JFK on a Friday.

~LGA arrival time is 1:00 p.m. (will need to collect luggage)

~JFK departure time for an INTERNATIONAL flight is 5:00 p.m.

A friend (who works for a NJ limo service) recommended her friend who owns a car service in NYC and said he would charge $50 + tips. I have no idea if that is a good price or not. However, I think I would prefer a car service for this transfer hoping they would be more reliable, may know more "backroads" in case the traffic is horrendous at that hour, and it is a set price, not metered.

Any other suggestions?

It's only about 12 miles from LGA to JFK and it's doubtful you'd have any major traffic problems early afternoon on Friday. Even with moderate traffic the trip by car service or taxi should only take 30 minutes. I doubt taking "back roads" would save you any time and probably even take longer - lots of traffic lights on side roads.

Go here for a list of options: http://www.panynj.gov/airports/lga-a...nnections.html

Personally I'd just hop in a taxi - there will be plenty waiting at the airport - fare will run about $32 if traffic is light, $37 in medium traffic and perhaps $48 if traffic is REALLY HEAVY.

No - that is a terrible price.

I would just grab a cab - should not be more than the cost of the shuttle bus for 2 people and will be less waiting and circling through numerous different terminals.

I know 4 hours may seem a lot but for international flights they often like you to check in 3 hours before flight time and since flights into LGA are often late and you have checked luggage I think you will be lucky to get to JFK by 2 pm.

DO NOT pay anyone $50 for this ride.

You can take a regular taxi from LGA to JFK and it will cost less than $50.

But you need to high-tail it out of LGA as fast as you possibly can. Luggage collection there is very slow, and I really doubt you will get out of LGA before 2pm, which means there's no way you're going to make the recommended 3-hour cut-off for a JFK international flight.

FYI: The luggage check-in cut-off at JFK for many airlines is 90 minutes before the flight ... so I think you can see why time is of the essence. I would never allow less than 5 hours between flights if changing airports, so you have not really allowed enough time to do this connection comfortably.

Make sure you have done any online check-in for your international flight if it is available. That way perhaps all you have to do is drop off your luggage and do a quick passport check.

I knew that there were timing issues and that's one reason I posted my question.

We may be able to do carry on for the US portion; and I will have to check into online check-in for the international. Not sure it's available.

Thanks for the $$ info.

Thanks!!!

If you do carry on for the domestic flight, why would you check luggage for your international flight? We always carry on.

Some international flights (particularly on non-US carriers) have more stringent carry-on requirements than domestic US carriers. But I have no idea if that applies in this case. I'd probably try to carry my bags on as well, particularly if the transfer time is short. But if you have time to check, why not do it? If you can make the decision spontaneously, that's the ideal situation to be in.

No, don't try the shuttle bus. You need individual transport for maximum efficiency, not a group transport that leaves when the ridership fills up.

Get a quote from these guys (http://www.dial7.com) and google car service LGA to JFK to compare.

And yeah, LGA bag retrieval is horrendous. You'd think they took your stuff on a walking tour of Queens before sending it on the belts.

The OP doesn;t have time for the shuttle - which waits to fill up and then circles the many terminals at JFK letting people off.

If they had another hour or two they could risk it. As it is - they don;t have extra time - and if their incoming plane lands late or luggage is delayed they may find themselves running to make their flight - after long lines for checking in luggage and going through international security.
