Sheraton Kauai
We are planning our first trip to Kauai in June and were looking into the Sheraton on Poipu Beach. Does anyone know anything about the Sheraton or the Poipu Beach area? Just want to make sure we're doing it right.
Thanks for any input.

Hi Teri,
We stayed at the Kauai Sheraton last June. I would only recommend staying in the ocean front or maybe ocean view rooms. The resort itself is really pretty and in a good location.
The "garden view" rooms are actually in a series of building ACROSS THE STREET from the main part. Again the grounds are pretty.....but you are paying top dollar for a hotel across the street from the beach.
So, to summerize if staying in an ocean front room, yes. If not, I would find somewhere else to stay.
We've been 3 times. Stayed at the north shore once, east coast once and South once. Hoping to go again next summer and want to split our stay between the north shore and Poipu area.
Have a great time!!!!!

I'm in agreement with Zach....the ocean view or ocean front rooms are best. The garden view rooms are across the street and behind the beach view building. It's also the older part of sheraton that wasn't rebuilt after the last hurricane. Don't get me wrong, the qualities are still Sheraton, so, unless you're getting a great value by staying in garden view, pay the additional and get into the ocean view building. Additionally, ask to NOT be in an ocean view/front room over the bar...it's noisy! Another plus of the ocean view/front rooms....FANTASTIC sunset views!
Just remember that if you plan on doing any sightseeing, Poipu is off the beaten path and if you have plans to hike Waimea canyon, visit Princeville and Hanalei, you'll be driving a minimum of 45 min to get anywhere.
Unless you plan on staying put in the Poipu area, I would suggest staying in a more centralized area, like Kapaa. The hotels aren't as lux, but if you want to save on driving time, definitely worth it. My suggestion is to decide what activities you want to do, then centralize your hotel/condo.
We stayed in Poipu the first time and spent at least 2 hours a day driving to different places. (it's 15 min drive alone just to get back to the main highway!)
the second time around we rented a condo in Kapaa and were able to spend a lot more time relaxing and less time driving.
The last few times - we've stationed ourselves in the Princeville area, since our favorite beaches are over there...
You'll still have a wonderful time. Sheraton Poipu is great.....if you're lucky, you'll see the endangered monk seals sunning themselves on the Sheraton beach. an added plus is that you can actually walk to the Poipu beach area from the Sheraton beach...just follow the coast line to your left (facing the ocean)....you'll have to walk around/over some boulders, but it's a nice scenic stroll. Also, within walking distance from the Sheraton is Roy's Restaurant. Definitely a great restaurant if you're a "foodie".
HAVE FUN!

We stayed there for our honeymoon in May 2001. It is a nice hotel but as mentioned above- stick to the ocean or Beach wings. We stayed in the garden view (hoping to gey our honeymoon upgradebut they were filled) and the rooms were just o.k. and across from the beach. When I peeked into an ocean wing room I was shocked! Completely different decor/lighting, etc. and muck nicer and modern than the garden view. I would stay there again in the beach or ocean view rooms but not in the garden wing. Also, yes, it may be a distance to a few places but Poipu is the Sunny side of the island. We enjoyed driving to places and seeing the local sights and the beauty of the island. Most places took us about 30 min. to get to but it was a fun adventure! If everything is too close you miss out on seeing a lot on the way! And it is not like big city driving - very relaxed, scenic and no traffic! Have Fun!

Teri,
We stayed at the Sheraton this past February. We stayed in a deluxe ocean room and it was great. Upon arrival they unloaded our luggage from our vehicle and whisked us away to our room to check-in. No stopping at the front desk
to wait in line. Our room was located on the 4th floor which is the top floor and it had a cathedral ceiling so you didn't have that closed in feeling. The view from our lanai was the pool and ocean. The room was clean and the staff
was friendly. We found this to be a very
relaxing and comfortable hotel.
We had our children with us and they loved the beach there. It is a very pretty beach. the did some boogie boarding. And yes, we were one of the lucky ones to see the monk seal beach right out in front of the hotel.
We only ate once in the hotel and that was for the breakfast buffet. It was okay. We saw some awesome sunsets from the lounge area where they had nightly mia tias and entertainment. I think it was from 5- 6 p.m.
I agree with the previous poster that you do have to drive a little bit to see everything. We didn't mind because we like to explore. We found the hotel to be very quiet after 9-10 p.m. I think that is why we really liked it in the Poipu area. The whole island is georgeous you can't go wrong. Have fun.

I agree, get an ocean front room. Yes, poipu may be a bit of a drive from some places, but it is a nice fairly quiet part of the island and it does have shopping and some very nice restaurants and great beaches. The beach in front of the Sheraton is a great beach, and you will enjoy it. Kapaa may be central but as another person mentioned not as many high end hotels. Also, the beaches near Kapaa generally are not the best swimming beaches, lots of coral and reefs. Poipu beaches are sandy and very swimmable if that effects your decision.
