Will you have a car? If no, staying in Union Square would be best IMO. You can get to the Wharf on your tour and/or cable car. If yes, let me know as there are properties in the Marina/ Cow Hollow area (near Fisherman's Wharf that have free parking and are more reasonable than Union Square overall. What's your price range, and do you need a suite or a standard room?

You may also want to look into the Buena Vista Inn and Suites, and Cow Hollow in and Suites. They're in the Marina/ Cow Hollow are. I stayed at a sister hotel to them, Coventry Motor Inn. I think you can get a room suite for the four of you in the 100 - 130 range. And free parking. I think parking in both Fisherman's Wharf and Union Square area are pricey ($22.- to $35.- ish).

I meant a suite, not a room suite. A standard room at the coventry was $79.- plus tax last fall. The suites are higher. You may want to check out their websites. I think there are other posts about the Fisherman's Wharf area and places to stay, as I personally haven't stayed there. Or check www.tripadvisor.com for reviews/ rankings.

I would stay in Union Square area and take the cable car to Fisherman's Wharf. There are many small hotels around the Union Sq. area ... Kensington Palace, Maxwell, Diva, and there's also a very nice Crowne Plaza on Sutter St. (we live in the 'burbs but go to the theater and stay overnight in the city frequently; we were both born there). You do have to be a little careful because some of the hotels are borderline-dump (I would avoid the Savoy, but maybe they've improved it since last stayed there). There are a lot of motels along Lombard St. corridor but they're pretty much like motels anywhere, and you're a long way from anything--but they would be cheaper. Union Sq. has the shopping, cable cars, and the tour buses leave from there I believe. And bring a sweater! Believe it or not, you'll probably need it in August!

Friends with teens stayed at the Radisson Wharf and enjoyed it, though the room was basic it was large enough for 4 and the location is wharf-front.

Columbus Motor Inn is a short walk to the wharf and includes parking, i think they have one or two "family-sized" rooms that are larger than the regular rooms.

If you can get a room parking package, Hotel Diva or Hotel Adiago (they have suites) on Geary street may work for you. See the other JVD properties too:

Also check out my Lomabard St. suggestions:

We have had great luck with the Andrews on Post Street.. The best part would be for you with the teens there is a huge continental breakfast on each floor which would start your teens off in the a.m. We've been there twice and find it convenient. www.andrewshotel.com
