One nice place is the Marina...there is a grassy park-like area and plenty of room to run around - and you can see the boats come in under the GG - and also the planes, if you are there for the air show. The weather is usually fantastic!

hellokittie - We did this with our kids while visiting SF about 8 or 9 years ago and they had a blast. Like cabovacation said, the Marina was a great place to see the air activity. I think Marina Green park just off Marina Boulevard was where we watched.
However, one note of caution. We were staying at a hotel near Union Square and we had taken a cab to the Marina earlier in the day. When the activities were over and because of the large crowds, it was almost impossible to find transportation back to our hotel. My wife, older kids, and I would have been game for the long, hilly walk back, but it was an unusually warm day. Our youngest child was not up for a walk of that magnitude under those conditions, but was too big for us to carry. Fortunately, we finally prevailed upon a kindhearted driver of a shuttle van whose hotel was just a couple of blocks from ours to take us back. Just keep return transportation in mind when making your plans or time your departure before everything is over.

IMHO the VERY best place to watch the flyovers is from Angel Island. Take the ferry to Tiburon and then the state ferry across the channel to the island.
You willl be sitting on an island w/ ALL of San Francisco spread out before you. And the planes/ships between you and the city. Truly, an unforgettable experience!
