SF/Bay Area - which stores for cheap luggage?

If you were looking for some super cheap suitcases or other "to be checked" type of bags that were not supposed to last very long, where would you go?

Target, Walmart,..?
Any other chains or stores?
We'll have a car so not restricted to downtown SF.

TIA for any ideas.

Target, maybe but don't be surprised when you get there and see all that SwissGear and the like being sold.

It's going to sound funny, but I'd go to Macy's. Depending on when you are looking, you can get even better bang for your buck than target. Macy's runs the most incredible luggage sales- even better than outlet stores in my experience.

Any particular reason you don't need them to last long?? Do you need hard shell or will soft shell do? Because I've found duffels pretty cheap at surplus store nor Walmart.

I agree about Macy's sales. If they have Tuesday Morning, that is the place to go also.
Marshall's. TJMaxx. An ArmyNavy store

For cheapest and usually with a pretty large selection -- Ross, Marshall's, TJMaxx and Tuesday Morning

Or for a little more $$ and a much bigger selection - Macy's if you have their discount coupons.

For luggage, I don't find Target inexpensive at all.

Thanks to all for the input!
That helps a lot!
Very much appreciated!

@marvelousmouse
The reason for this sort of strange inquiry is that we will be three people traveling the SW by car for 2 1/2 wks - and then fly from Vegas to SF for 4 nights in the Bay Area.
Due to status, I can check 2 bags for free on the intercontinental legs from/ back to Germany.
But I don't need / want a (then still empty) 2nd bag for the road trip through CO, NM, AZ to Vegas.
So, we dediced to do most of our (clothing) shopping when in the Bay Area. If we overdo on shopping, we will need that extra bag.

For clothing, definitely get a duffel. You can stuff it forever.

Do they have Walmarts in the Bay Area? What about REI?

I don't know if Ross etc always has the best prices, eg recently took a friend off a cruise ship to Ross to buy a suitcase and a lightweight rollaboard carryon size was at least $59.

I agree with using a lightweight duffel for clothing purchases.

Also Costco if any of you has a UK membership, although it will probably luggage sets only.

Having a duffle-type bag that folds up and you could bring with you to save time. We have one and use it to stuff shoes and dirty clothes when we are returning home.

For REALLY cheap, just hit up a random retail store on Market Street.

Thanks again for taking time to respond.
We'll probably have enough time to check all/most of the options.

11hrs till departure to Denver...

Burlington coat factory.

Also in Chinatown along Stockton Street

MLGB, Wal-Marts in Bay Area yes, but not in the city. We have Targets in the city, including downtown.

Whatever you get, make sure it has wheels... super light weight suitcases even very cheap one's last a long time. I've had the best luck at Any Tuesday, or Target. Largest selection of cheap ones as well.
