Seeking advice for Moab trip

My husband and I are 50 (but with no kis, we still think we're 40). In early June we're flying into Salt Lake City and have one and a half weeks to spend in Utah, with a concentration in Moab area and perhaps south and southwest of that. We'd like to stay a few days here, a few days there for variety. Not into motels or condos, we're more attracted to the B&Bs and the mid- to high-end lodges. The B&Bs are just about full; I'm looking for recommendations from the group. We live in the Boston suburbs, have not been to southern Utah, although we very much enjoyed Sedona, Arizona a few years back. Looking to do some calm water rafting, light hiking, sightseeing, photography, horseback riding, and enjoying a spa service or two if we can. In addition, has anyone stayed at the Sundance Resort?

Hi Genie,

As far as places to stay, my personal recommendations would be:

Moab - The Dreamkeeper Inn (B&B)
Zion - The Novel House (Inn)
Boulder - Boulder Mountain Lodge

These are the ones I've stayed with more than once and keep returning to.

Other posters here like:

Moab - Cali Conchita, Sunflower Inn, Sorrell River Ranch, Red Cliffs Lodge (the last two are both a 30 minute, one way drive out of Moab on the CO River - in different directions). I much prefer staying in town.

As far as spa services go, Moab has massage service, but I don't know what else. Other places, services will be very limited, if anything.

Sundance is a very, very special place. One of the most beautiful places on earth. Rustic elegance, laid back, excellent restaurant, The Tree Room. I have not stayed there myself as it's far beyond my budget, but I have spent a lot of time there over the years. Learned to ski there!

Another suggestion would be Stein Erickson's Lodge at Deer Valley, a 5 diamond AAA rated property, only 1 or 2 in UT. Outstanding in every way and summer rates are a real deal.

Sundance would be a hour drive from SLC Intl and Stein's is a 35 minute drive.

Hope this helps

The Colorado River near Moab gets class II and some class III rapids. I don't know if that's what you consider calm.

As someone who's in their mid-50's, we love Moab and do a lot of hiking in thea area. If you can, rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle and do some of the 4x4 trails in the area.

Thanks to all for the advice. I'm working on the reservations given what's left of availability.

Flying into and out of SLC, I've made our first and last stop at Little America (have been to Grand America for corporate meetings and found it's little sister has the same gracious service and top value).

Down to Sky Ridge Inn to see Capitol Reef, then Moab: first Cali Cochita then Red Cliffs Lodge.

Before heading back to Little America from the Lodge, we plan to spend the afternoon at Sundance to spa and have dinner at the Tree Room.

Now that I have the accomodations, anyone have advice on best outfiters to work with for rafting, park touring, etc.?

Please tell Kim and David that Debi from Fodors message board sent you; they are the nicest people and David makes a mean breakfast.
