There are several seafood restaurants on River Street. When I want seafood in Savannah I usually go to the Pink House which is more of a fine dining experience (but the food is out of this world!).
If you are really wanting what you are describing, then drive out to Desposito's. Here's a link that includes that restaurant with directions and description -

Thanks for asking the question. I did a web search to get more info on D's and just love this website. I'm going to use it on my travels!

Hi gromit, how is wallace? ![Imported](https://www.fodors.com/community/images/smilies/imported/smiley.gif)
We were in Savannah a few weeks ago, I used this site for research.

Personally, I would recommend the River House for lunch, great shrimp and crab and the Pink House for dinner.

While not a "crab shack" I would like to recommend...Lady and Sons...
A Southern Buffet or eat off the menu with amazing crab cakes.
Make a reservation, or you will be sorry! Long lines as this is a favorite...

The Crab Shack going into Tybee Island was really really good. We had a low country boil & it was sooo good and right on the water. I think you'll really like this place. Also I have to agree with the other poster to check out Lady & Sons Restraunt. Down home southern cooking. Their fried chicken & sweet tea are wonderful

I was going to recommend the Crab Shack as well. Yes, its touristy---but it is also quintessential southern IMO.
Growing up (in Savannah)I had the crab shack experience regularly--but at home or a friends homes. We never ate seafood out--we could always catch it or buy it cheaper off the docks, no need to eat out. I think they do a good job of replicating an experience...or maybe I'm just sentimental

Absolutely, the Crab Shack. It has changed tremendously since we lived there, when it really was a crab shack attracting mostly locals, and although it has been "found" and grown into something very unshack-like, it's still the closest you'll get to a true crab shack experience in Savannah. I too love their low country boil!
