Savannah with teenagers

We are planning on a stay in Savannah as part of a driving tour from CT to home in Florida. First off, we are looking for somewhere interesting to stay in Savannah, possibly a bed and breakfast either in the city or on Tybee Island. Is it worth it to stay on Tybee Island? We live in Southern Florida and have stayed in many lovely places on the beach so not sure if it would be better to stay in the city. Please note that we are a family of four so not many b& b's can accomodate that. Second, can we find enough activities in and around the area for 2 days? Lastly, can anyone recommend a good stopping point somewhere between Philadelphia and Savannah, we don't want to make the trip in one day.
Thank you for any and all suggestions-

If you are from Southern Florida you are not going to be impressed with Tybee. It's nice to have a beach near Savannah, but it's not a great beach. It is a bit funky and fun to visit, but I wouldn't recommend as your base given where you live. It doesn't really have a lot of "lovely places on the beach".

I'd definitely stay in Savannah. My new favorite hotel is the Staybridge Suites on Bay Street. A couple of other possibilities of hotels that feel more "innish" would be the East Bay Inn or the River Street Inn (get a room overlooking the river). I'm not sure how many B&Bs would have accomodations for 4 but some have little cottages or carriage houses that are better suited for families. There's enough to do for 2 days.

Midway between Philly and Savannah? The midway point is not all that interesting (in NC). Maybe someone else can think of something. Maybe Richmond VA? According to Google Maps, the Philly - Richmond route can take up to 5 hr, 50 min with traffic. That leaves 7.5 hrs the next day to Savannah. More midway would be Rocky Mt, NC but there's really not much to see along that stretch of the highwy - at least that I know of.

Are you looking for somewhere interesting to stop between Philadelphia and Savannah, or just somewhere to sleep? Starrs is right - I-95 in NC doesn't have much. Raleigh might be interesting if you're willing to go a little out of your way.

Definitely enough to do in Savannah for two days. Three of us stayed in the Staybridge that starrs mentioned and had no problems. We walked everywhere except Bonaventure and Tybee.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will look into the hotels mentioned. We would like to stay somewhere interesting for the 2 days we have allowed to get from Phili to Savannah. We do these types of trips every year and try to find something new, so I know not much along I-95 in NC. Maybe we will check out Richmond for a day and then do an overnight somewhere. You mentioned Bonaventure what is that?

Bonaventure Cemetery - one of the most popular attractions outside Savannah, I believe, and heavily featured in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Oddly, Fodor's destinations page doesn't seem to list it, but it's pretty well known.

Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill might be a good stopping point, if you don't mind driving a bit out of your way.

Two nice places are Edenton NC and New Bern NC. Boh will take you out of your way.

You can get from Richmond to Savannah in one day.

Tybee is 30 minutes out-of-the-way. Since you will be going to the beach I would pass on a visit to Tybee.
