Hotel off Rt 95-

My husband and I are driving down to Florida from PA in May. We are hoping to stop off for 1 night in Savannah. Can anyone recommend a good hotel that would make sense for this stop over. Perhaps Hampton Inn? Also, if anyone knows of a good restaurant for dinner- we would love to have a good meal and enjoy Savannah even if its for a short time.

Thank you,,
Robyn

The hotels right off I95 have "Gateway" in their names. Drive a bit further towards Savannah and you are at the "Midtown" hotels. Drive further and you are in the Historic District. There are chain restaurants galore on the drive in via Midtown. If you want to eat IN Savannah, my favorite is the Pink House. My favorite hotel is the Hampton Inn Historic District at Bay and Abercorn.

If you don't stay in town, then I'd get a hotel in Midtown for the night rather than driving all the way back out to I95 that night to a gateway hotel.

We stayed at the Doubletree in Savannah which was nice. No room in the Hampton Inn in which we originally had reservations, but had to change our dates of visit. If you do not want to stay in Savannah I would suggest The Hampton Inn on exit 53-I95 between Savannah and Florence, but the stop in Savannah would be the most enjoyable.
Ate at the Chart House in Savannah on the river which was wonderful. Good service and food.

Can you recommend a moderate restaurant ---not as expensive yet good and NOT a chain? Maybe a pub with good salads and such.

Thank you,

Robyn

Robyn, if you come in to Savannah and walk River Street, there are quite a few places to choose from.

A pub that comes to mind is the Six Pence Pub in the Historic District at 245 Bull Street.

We did the same a few years ago (the drive is LONG). We had our dog with us so were limited to hotels that would take the dog. We stayed at the La Quinta just off 95 but downtown Savannah is actually about 15- 20 mins drive from there. We ate at Bistro Savannah and it was excellent and I thought not too expensive. If you're interested in my trip report (not encouraging) it's here

I should add there are lots of previous threads on Savannah hotels and restaurants and many people recommend Bistro Savannah.

There is a new Hilton Garden Inn in the midtown area of Savannah scheduled to open this month. I selected it as the site of our ship's reunion in September. It has a free shuttle to take guests to the historical area.
