Savannah-Places to Stay
Hi! I am going on a trip with my mom to Savannah and Charleston in late September. We are looking for nice, but inexpensive (meaning $80.00 or less) places to stay in those two cities. Any suggestions? We wanted to stay in the historic district, but is midtown ok to stay in?

You might have a difficult time finding a hotel in the historic area for under $80 but you could try Priceline. There is a Days Inn and Hampton Inn that might be cheaper. Staying in midtown in fine and you should be under budget but you will have to drive to downtown (about a 10 min drive).

I am not a Days Inn fan AT ALL, but the one in the historic district in Savannah is supposed to be nice, and their location is excellent. If you can stretch to $106 night, you could stay there. I think it would be worth it to stay in the historic district, and be able to walk to so many places. I don't think you will find a place in the historic area for $80/night in late September, but I could be wrong......... Good luck!

I plugged in a few days for the last week in September at the Days Inn Historic District, and got a special web-rate of $87.00. Click on this link:

I'm also taking my mom to Savannah and Charleston in April and would love to know how your trip goes and what you enjoyed doing the most. Any suggestions about the places you stayed and dined at would be appreciated too. Currently we are at the French Quarter and the Hyatt. The French Quarter does have an AARP rate but it is still pretty pricey. Have fun on your trip.

Usually I think you can only get the full senior rate by booking on line. And they don't make it easy. When you open their home page, look to the right side for a small red box that says "other special offers" or something like that. Click it and on the next page scroll down to what is usually the last one "Senior Rates". I just tried a few dates in April, though, and it didn't offer those, despite that hotel being listed in the list of those that do have senior rates. It may be too early for that, or maybe blocked out for some reason. I've found those Hyatt Senior rates some of the best bargains anywhere.
We were just there one night on our way driving north. Had a great stay and a very nice room, but our room's view was blocked by a huge private yacht (like a medium sized cruise ship) which supposedly belonged to Merv Griffin. We were on probably the lowest floor of rooms.

The ownership changed hands, but it is still a Hyatt and yes, they are putting multi millions into renovation. Ownership changes are common and do not affect the operation in any way. I don't know when the renovation will start...those things are ages in the planning prior to implementation. When it is done, it is normally done, in the ones I've experienced with Hyatt anyway, floor by floor so as not to disrupt the operation of the hotel nor affect the guests.
I am not that familiar with senior rates, if they are only available during slower times, like Priceline rooms, or if they are always available, but April is one of the very busiest tourist months in Savannah. Everything in bloom + perfect weather=$$$ in room rate tiers.

deborahk, I can't speak specifically of the Hampton Inn in Savannah, but honestly, I have never been in a Hampton Inn that wasn't really nice, for the money, and I've stayed in several locations. I always go into them with complete confidence because of that.

Although I did not stay there, the Savannah Hampton Inn is well-situated but in a noisy area (but so is the Hyatt). The reviews on tripadvisor.com are excellent. It seems that it is a step up from typical Hampton Inns which are consistently good.

I stayed at Hamptom Inn for 3 nights in early September when dropping son off at college. Location is great - one block up from River Street. Parking is $8/day either in their underground garage, their small lot across the street, or city garage across the street.
Room was above average in size, had view of square across the street. All furnishings in good repair and everything very clean. Coffee pot in room. Breakfast included - continental - was average. There is a fitness room and rooftop pool that I did nto see or use.
Had slight problem with credit card verification (not hotel's fault) and they were very apologetic and comped parking for me without my asking.
Hotel has no restaurant or bar, although cash bar in lobby for a few hours early PM. Did not miss either, as many great places to eat or drink on River Street.
However, it did not fit in price range of OP - I paid something like $130 per night - however, rates everyplace were a little higher that week since 5000 SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) students were arriving that week and many had families in need of place to stay. Also, did not shop intensively for lower price at this specific hotel.

I always stay at the motels on So, Abeercorn St. near the Mall. Have a big buffet breakfast at Shoneys across the street and drive up Abercorn to The Court House, park nearby and sightsee on River Street and watch the ships go by. Only a 15 minute drive along Abercorn and you get to see the lovely oaks and homes on the squares. lovely oaks and
