San Franciso - Golden Gate or Rex hotels?

I wondered if anyone had stayed at either of these.

We stayed at the Hotel Rex a few years ago, and really liked it. The front desk is very helpful, the hotel is well-kept, it's located near Union Square, the price was good, an evening cocktail hour was included.

It's one of the Joie de Vivre properties, which all get good reviews.

Know the Rex, haven't stayed at either one. They are very near each other so location is not an issue.

Take a look at tripadvisor for more reviews.

Hotel Rex gets rave reviews here on Fodor's, and I know it's in a safe area of Union Square.

Where is Golden Gate hotel?

My husband and I stayed at the Golden Gate probably 8 years ago or more. I don't imagine it has changed much though. We liked it for what it was ... reasonably priced. Our first night we had a very small back room with a shared bath .. this room was very quiet. The last night we had a larger room that faced front and the street noise made it very difficult for me to sleep.

It is in a good location for walking and catching the cable cars.

The Golden Gate is on Bush between Powell and Mason - so just a a block up from the Rex, which is on Sutter between Powell and Mason . . . .

I don't know if it will work for you, but The Mosser has Deluxe Queen rooms with private baths for $75 a night if you stay 7 nights. It is on 4th street, near Market, so it is a convenient location. We are staying there in March. Will post trip report when we get home.

Just got back last week - stayed a week at Hotel Rex. Love it. It was our 2nd trip to Rex - could not say enough nice things Hotel Rex and staff. Will certainly stay there on our next trip.
