Orchard or Rex Hotel in San Francisco?

We will be in San Francisco for three days at the end of January and have read excellent reviews for both these hotels. Has anyone stayed at either of them recently?

Also we've read mixed reviews about the Cartwright Hotel.

Any comments would be very much appreciated, thank you.

I can only say Rex was closed for remodeling for a while. The area is good and safe. Sutter street. Guess where I live

Don't know where the other 2 are located.

I stayed at the Orchard last Dec for a shopping trip. I loved it and would go back. It is a small, boutique hotel, with wonderful French linens on the beds. It is about two blocks to Union Square and the cable car can be caught right at the corner. The concierge suggested where to have dinner and even made the reservations. I am planning to go again this Dec.

I work for a company that has a regional office in the heart of SF and they recommend The Orchard as a prime hotel for traveling employees and customers.
One of our co-workers came to the NJ office just recently and he mentioned this hotel to me and told me to definitely stay there when I come out!
He highly recommended it!!

I stayed at the Orchard Hotel in September for three nights. I was not impressed. Some of the staff were not courteous and lacked polish. The room was quiet and well-finished but not very large. Nothing really "wowed" me about the place but a few things definitely put me off. The location is definitely desirable, but my experience would absolutely prevent me from going back.

We stayed at The Rex in September. I was not impressed, after staying at several similar priced hotels in that area, Galleria Park and The Chancellor seemed to have more to offer. The Chancellor is right across the street from Scala's restuarant which is wonderful. Galleria Park is just a few blocks from Union Square and the rooms were very nice (ask for a corner room). I have not stayed at the Orchard.

Chico, can you tell me about the Chancellor. I have never stayed there.
Have you? And if so, what are the rooms like, were you happy with the hotel staff etc. Thank you!

To LoveItaly:

If you stay at the Chancellor request an upper floor facing Union Square. The staff there was very friendly and helpful. This is an old hotel, very clean, friendly, reasonable and in a good location. We will definitely stay again. However, I would not choose this if you were looking for something exta special such as for a honeymoon etc.
