The forecast looks cool and wet for our weekend in SF. Any suggestions for foul-weather activities?

Dress up in rain gear and enjoy NOT standing in line for the cable car. Take it to Ghirardelli Square for either an irish coffee at the Buena Vista or coffee and ice cream at the Ghirardelli coffee shop. Then go to one of the town's great museums afterwards.

If you are talking about this weekend, right now Sunday looks to be the day with most rain; Saturday the prediction is just showers. So try to do as much outside on Saturday; and save things like the DeYoung, MOMA, the Asian Art Museum, even Alcatraz for Sunday. If helps any, it does not appear that the predicted rain will be severe, i.e. not a downpour. We just know we are supposed to get some rain.

In the SF Chronicle a month or so ago, they said that Ghirardelli is currently "dug up" - they're doing a major renovation & turning much of it into luxury timeshares. About the only thing open now is the ice cream place & the Mandarin restaurant.

Thanks, all. Stu, I printed out the winter schedule of sfcityguides. If the weather clears up, I would love to take one of the outdoor walks.

Stu, thanks for the construction update, but I should have been more clear about Ghirardelli as a destination - I actually could care less whether the shopping arcade is "dug up". The best thing to do there is to stroll along the seashore and enjoy the great water views. In this case, with an umbrella, or just looking out of the Buena Vista windows. The Buena Vista is actually a block away from Ghirardelli Square proper.

Ivk --hope you had a good weekend, because as usual the weather forecast was wrong and Sunday was lovely. This is why we locals advise people to be flexible in their plans, the forecast is often unreliable in the details.

We had a lovely rainy afternoon at the Ferry Building: lunch at the taqueria, browsed the many gourmet food shops, tasted wine at the wine shop, bought wine, cheese, bread and chocolate to take back to the hotel, left feeling very satisfied at not having "wasted" a bad weather day. (Before the Ferry Bldg., we checked out the Cable Car Museum, which was pretty cool, too.)

Coming from Seattle, I go ahead with whatever my original plans were, regardless of the weather (just ducked into a corner store and purchase an umbrella).

Like Newbe, We ended up spending our rainy afternoon at the Ferry Building. Shopped around the market stands and then sat in the Wine Merchant for several hours. We enjoyed a few bottles of wine "catching up" with DH's cousin and spouse. He had not seen her in over 20 years, when they both moved away from Germany -- she to England and he to the U.S. It was a very nice way to spend a rainy afternoon.
