i don't spend as much time as i want to in san fran, but one of my top is tad's steak house on powell(no snickering) however, i have notices that the prices have creeped up over time. i think i paid around $1.98. must be around $10 now. besides mising the cheap steak, i miss the great times at the iron horse on maiden lane. it was a jumping place.

Californian/American cuisine not my favorite, so I can't list 5.
* Greens -- great (vegetarian) food and view; think the food is good enough to appease a meat eater (says my meat eating husband)
* Gary Danko
* Beach Chalet Brewery and Restaurant --good food, great views (especially at sunset)

Gary Dankos http://www.garydanko.com/ excellent food and service. We had a great meal in nice surroundings. But it doesn't have a view and I wouldn't call it romantic.

Boulevard (expensive) has Californian/American cuisine, a view, and a romantic ambience. It usually makes various "best of the city" restaurant lists. It's in an 1889 building right down on the waterfront near the Bay Bridge.
Here's a link with a few pictures:

In no particular order the following are highly regarded/rated California or California/American restaurants in San Francisco (where did this practice of calling SF, San Fran come from?):
Boulevard
Farallon
Fifth Floor
Jardinere
Myth
Range
Nopa
Frisson
Salt House
Town Hall

I would agree with Frascati and Boulevarde, but would like to add The Hyde Street Seafood House And Raw Bar (I thought that was the best meal we had last trip). Also Gary Danko (more upscale and very expensive), The Slanted Door and Scoma's for old time San Francisco (good food but go hungry).

I love Asia de Cuba in the Clift Hotel, Geary Street. Food is amazing and there's great ambience. In the lobby, there is a gorgeous fire place and lounge for drinks. Food is a bit pricey, but plates are meant for sharing. Went there for my honeymoon.
