Hello there!

I am travelling to san diego towards the end of august with my family (inc kids 10 & 12) and staying at the Marriott Coronado.

We have lots of things planned including a Padres game and a Chargers game, but wondered if you guys could direct me to some interesting/fun restaurants which are good for kids (possibly near the sport venues?). They will eat pretty much any type of cuisine

good pizza at mountain mikes in claremont and pizza port in solana beach
drive up the coast to carlsbad - i think it's there where there is a restaurant at the end of the pier
grab a picnic dinner from one of the grocery stores and go to sunset cliffs by oceanbeach, la jolla shores, "the strand" south of coronado, cabrillo national monument, by the pier in oceanbeach (watch the surfers and take a walk out onto the pier before or after dinner)

Hi...I'd take the family to the "Old Town" section of San Diego city for dinner & fun. It's not far from the Coronado bridge, easy to find (Marriott will gladly give directions, map) There's a definite Mexican Village atmosphere with music & several Indoor/outdoor restaurants. Also features shops that are reproductions of an actual market place, lots of fun, color & food is delicious. One of the rest. (forgot name but it's set a bit apart from the center of activities) is esp.good. Large outdoor fountain set amid tables. Later evenings is more "adult" diners but until about 9pm it's a real family fun place. Try going during the week when it's not so busy. Have a great visit......

Near the Charger game I'd hit Islands. It's in the Costco mall on the road into the stadium and has a great surfing, family atmosphere... Food is burgers, soft tacos - I'm a local and I take kids there all the time...

In Coronado go to the Village Pizzeria (on Orange at the end of Coronado where your hotel is) and and Miguel's (across from the Del). Big hits with my kids - ages 8 and 10.

Elleo, the Mexican Village you refer to no longer exists, nor do the restaurants - Casa De Bandini?. It has been replaced by a different concept and different restaurants.

Andy, before the Charger game, you might like Junior Seau's restaurant which is a huge sports place and is not far from, and on the trolley line to, Qualcomm. You can get more info ath the web site: www.seau.com (Junior was a Charger for many years and is now a Miami Dolphin)

I'm blanking on places near Petco, so I'll have to give it some more thought. There are plenty of restaurants in the general area, though. You know you have to eat hot dogs at baseball games, don't you?

You'll find that both venues have quite a range of food options, mostly good, but quite expensive. However, it can be easier to eat there than rush to eat before or eat late after the game.

I thought it was mandatory to eat fish tacos at a Padres game;-)

When I am going to the chargers - what's my best option for travel - is parking OK or should I use the trolley.

BTW thanks for the restaurant advice. I have also heard about Hodads at OB - is this good?

Andy, you're right. Fish tacos!

There's lots of parking at Qualcomm, but it can fill up. The worst part can be leaving, but at pre-season games quite a lot of people usually leave before the end. No guarantee, though! If you decide to park, I would arrive at least an hour before game time. You ought to do that in any case, so you have time to look around, buy food, watch the players warm up, absorb the atmosphere, etc. I like to get there about an hour and a half before kick off.

Hodad's - I'd go for lunch. You'll definitely need a car for that as it is in Ocean Beach. Personally, not a fan of the place or of OB but it is VERY popular here. (I think OB is pretty seedy myself).

If you wanted to do fish tacos at the Chargers game there is a Rubio's there (although you'd get better fish tacos at a local hole in the wall type place). If you wanted them at the Padres game - I'd highly rec Tin Fish - not in the Park but right next door. Seriously Pt. Loma Seafoods quality food without having to actually find Pt. Loma Seafoods...

You could take the Ferry from Coronado to downtown and the trolley from downtown to Qualcomm. It would probably be a bit time consuming but if you're hesitant to drive for some reason it is doable.
