With out actually traveling to Mexico - can anyone suggest the restaurant with the best refried beans in the area ?? Can't forget the margaritas, too !!

Try Old Town. The Casa de Bandini is fun or the Old Town Mexican cafe.

But the TRULY best Mexican food in San Diego are the little take out places. Really!
Robertos & Lolitas. Hands down, the best.

I say Casa di Bandini! Enjoyed the atmosphere and the food portions were huge! Enjoy... we loved San Diego.

Another vote for Casa De Bandini. Love the Margarita's, esp. (Although for a quickie, Roberto's is really good).

Any restaurant in Old Town would be excellent. Great Margaritas! What is Mexican food without the Margaritias to accompany the food? (Don't forget the salt around the glass). Have fun, enjoy America's Finest city!

Try El Agave just outside of Old Town if the Margaritas are important, and you know your tequilas. The food is good too.
Further north, El Callejon in Cardiff and Encinitas is good.
Maybe the Fidel's in Solana Beach is OK, but avoid the one in Carlsbad at all cost. It's strictly for tourists.

I vote for Fidels in Solana Beach. Great food. By the way Janet Jackson often stops in there when in town.

Try Old Town Mexican Cafe or any of those others suggested. For quick and cheap, El Indio, just off Interstate 5 a little south of Old Town.

Yummy - enjoy!

Old Town mexican is strictly for tourists. No locals with any taste would be caught dead eating the generic salsa and tacos.

The rolled tacos at Roberto's - YUM!

I use to live in S.D. I always went to Old Town for Mexican food. I would have to disagree with your comment. If I were to visit today, I would go to Old Town for Mexican Food.Although, I do leave the camera at home.

casa de bandini for a nice sit down meal with good margaritas but some of the best food is the little "hole in the wall" restaurants you'll find in different communities.

I'd have to agree that Old Town pretty much caters to the tourist crowds. Most locals don't have the patience to wait in long lines for mediocre food. Too many good "hole in the wall" joints to enjoy to waste time on bad food.
