For fun, festive family dining go to Old Town State Park and eat at Casa de Pico, Casa de Bandini, or Old Town Mexican cafe.
For authentic hole in the wall, eat at Quatro Milpas (sp?). As you are heading from SD to Cornado, exit Crosby and go left at stop sign and look for line of people. Don't go after dark.

For good Mexican food, I'd suggest Miguel's Cocina on Coronado Island. Be sure to ask for them to bring out some of their yummy cheese sauce with your chips.
If you want a more special meal out in Coronado, I'd recommend Chez Loma French Bistro on Loma Avenue.
Nothing fancy, but a San Diego favorite for taquitos is El Indio's - plenty of outdoor seating at this India Street location.

Returned last week from a trip to San Diego where we ate at a wonderful small Mexican restaurant in Old Town. The place is called "El Agave" and is situated upstairs atop a licquor store away from the usual tourist haunts. It is very charming and quaint where white tableclothes adorn each table. If you are into margarita drinks, this IS the place. Well noted for this. We ate lunch outside on small half enclosed patio. Service was excellent as was the food. Ordered light...chicken tacquitos. Very nice ambiance. You won't be disappointed. I would highly recommend this place to all Mexican food afficionados. (Check restaurant out on internet.)
Bon appetite.
