Salt Lake/Park City/Sundance

We are coming in Thurs night to Sun.am to Salt Lake City for a concert on Sat. evening at USANA Amphitheatre. Would like to know where would be a good area to stay/4-5-star hotel or resort for Mom & teenage son. Need somewhere "somewhat lively" and just remembered have fairly early(for us)flight out on Sun so either have to stay somewhere close -in or maybe two different places-Ruins everything! Just realized! Yipe!Anyway we need to know usual-anything to see(time),any really fun outstanding favorite restaurants, maybe kareoke(sp?) or live music under 21? Thanks!

Hello, Houmom:

For a moment, I thought I was the author of this post! I am doing practically the same itinerary in August to see James Taylor at the USANA. The only difference being, I lived in SLC for 5 years and will be staying with friends on this trip.

Will you have a car? If not, I would scratch staying in Park City or Sundance. The Grand America on Main Street fits within your star rating, and will also place you within the free fare zone for TRAX (light rail).

Some downtown restaurants that I like: The Blue Iguana (good Mexican), Skool Lunch (for sandwiches), The Melting Pot (even though it's a chain), The Other Place (for breakfast). I'm sure you'll get other recommendations.

www.slweekly.com will give you and your son an idea of what's going on with the music/club scene the weekend you are in town.

Yes, we are renting a car-distance no problem, except the early flight! At least it will be a Sun morning. How far is Park City & Sundance (45 min?)from SLC airport? I was thinking also of the Stein Erickson, but not sure since no snow (ha!)except to be able to say we stayed there. We are not very "active" -Love to go to "fun" Mex restaurants, "drive-by" the sights, I like to shop for accessories that have the local feel(will have to DRAG my son!)MAYBE a good pool. Most important is really nice room w/internet! Ha! Maybe hotel with other teens and good bar/restaurant for me. I'm afraid we hardly have time to rest with our schedule-four states-6 or 7 hotels in 11 days!I'll have to rest for couple weeks before we go again to Atlanta! Thanks for all your help-I'll check the web site you suggested.

Hi Houmom,

wow! who are you going to see? Must be someone good!

I live in Park City. If you want to stay at Stein's in Deer Valley, summer is a great time to do it. Excellent in every way, service, rooms, spa, food and scenery. Summer prices are a great deal compared to winter and you won't miss the snow. Summer is beautiful! If you stay there, it would be about 45 - 50 minute drive to SL international airport.

Park City Main street shopping sounds like just your style. However, son is going to be bored!!!! Unless he likes to skateboard? We have a great boarding park at the City Park. Maybe mountain bike? No one goes into bars unless 21. Nothing that I know of for teen nightlife, unless you could find a high school event happening at Park City HS.

I would not recommend Sundance. As beautiful and wonderful as it is, it's an EXTREMELY relaxing, small place (read, NO night life or shopping). It would be a minimum of 1 1/2 hours to the airport. (Unless Bob lends you a helicopter - which as far as I know he doesn't have).

Best Park City restaurants in my opinion:

Grappa (on Main Street) - need res
Glitratind (Stein's) - also need res
Adolph's (on Kearns)
Mikado (sushi - on Main)
Blind Dog (Prospector Square area)

Hope this helps somewhat.

Also came across Monocco(sp?)really something-don't know if I would hate or love-really different-or maybe for SF,but I LOVE the Four Seasons! We are going to SEVERAL "311" concerts-only way I can get him to travel-my son used to skateboard-fortunately he quit!We stayed at the Royal Pacific in Universal & the restaurant had Kereoke night-my son got up & sang! That's what I was looking for again-so much fun!

I think you are making this decision way too hard.

Stay at the Marriott City Center. Take a day trip up to Park City and let your son ride the Alpine Slide and Zip rides.

I think you're right-its just this is one part of trip that we have a little time. Just difficult when I know NOTHING about the area,we always go to Colorado(since we are from Houston). It would be easy if wintertime, but school . . .Ha! Oh well, I was just trying to do something that is comprable(sp?) to area so my son can get a feel of area more, but like he said this morning,he does not want to do any hiking, biking etc. I am definately considering the Marriott City Center. Thanks for your help.
