Romantic Weekend Getaway from NYC - Getting Engaged!

Hi All - My best friend is getting engaged and wants to make the engagement special for his girlfriend. He is looking for some ideas on a romantic weekend getaway from NYC to someplace convenient from Manhattan. He is planning to pop the question in February, so it will be wintertime. I am trying to help him with some ideas...I would normally recommend a long weekend in Paris, or maybe even a beach Caribbean trip, but they are both teachers, so vacation will be an issue at this time of year...

Any suggestions for a romantic weekend getaway at a cute B&B with a fireplace?? Or any other unique/different ideas for places that are convenient to get to from NYC?? He is completely open (aka clueless Thanks!!

There are tons of cute B&Bs in New York (Rhinebeck Arms) and the Berkshires. The issue is the weather in Feb. They might end up with not much to do if they want snowy stuff - but plenty if they just want to wander, antique hunt etc. If you google B&Bs in the BErshires you'll get a ton - but a car is really necessary.

Also - the weather has to co-operate in terms of not snowing out the weekend.

Someone will probably reco Mohonk Mountain House. Friends of mine were there about a year ago - and they found the food underwhelming and the atmosphere more rustic (as in hunting lodge) than romantic.

If they have a car this place is comfortable and romantic. Each room has private bath, balcony and fireplace. More private than I expected it to be and the rooms in back have a view of a large, pretty lake. We stayed here several times before we bought a place in the area and I kind of thought my husband would have proposed here! Is he sure that he wants to do this someplace they've never been?

I just recommended to a friend Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid and the house on the lake. He is going there in February for the same reason.

I agree with nytraveler about Mohonk Mountain House.

Sorry, I forgot to post the link

I don't think they would be too happy staying at Mohonk either even though it is a beautiful area.
