Road Trip from Central Florida to Upstate NY

Ok, I realize this is going to be a very broad question, but just hoping to get some good ideas of some small stops we could make along the way......

We'll be traveling, for 2 weeks at Christmas, w/ 4 kids---ages 14,11,11,& 9--and I was hoping there might be some nice stops along the way to upstate NY.

We'll be passing thru Georgia, South and North Carolina, Virginia, WV, Penn and Ny via I-95, I-77, I-79 and I-90 (I think )

On the way home, we're planning a visit to DC (US Marine Corp Museum) as we'll be staying in Maryland over New Year's.

Anyhoo, would love some ideas if you've traveled any part of this route!

Thanks

You might want to investigate Williamsburg, VA. You will have to worry about the winter weather above NC, but WMBG has many things to see and there are available suites in the area for the whole family. Using 295N around Richmond, WMBG is about 40 minutes east of Richmond.check history.org

im not sure how far westbound you plan to deviate from I-95 along in your travels from florida to new york, but you have this thread listed under "Oklahoma".

Heck, it's showing up in the Hawaii forum, too. That's even further west than Oklahoma!

Not sure of your exact route - Will you be on I-77 to Charleston, WV then hit I-79 in Charleston to Pa?

If you were going taking I-77 from Charleston to Pa then I would suggest stopping at Olgebay Park in Wheeling. They have a great Christmas light show.

goto events then Winter Festival of Lights

Here are some stops in WV if you are just passing through. They are right along the highway. WV is a great outdoor playground but sounds like you want some quick stops:

1. In Beckley, WV (I-77 and I-64 join here) stop at the Tamarack for a meal. The restaurant is run by The Greenbrier (award-winning resort http://www.greenbrier.com) and Greenbrier chefs do the food. It is sort of cafeteria style but don't let that put you off - the food is wonderful.

The Tamarack sets on the hill behind a travel rest area - you can't miss it - it is weird looking with a bright spiky roof. In addition to the restaurant, it sells wares and crafts of WV artisans, etc. Neat place to wonder around and look for an hour or so & great things to buy (but many are pricey). Don't confuse it with the travel stop which sits right beside the highway, you use the same entrance but go up the hill to the Tamarack.

2. The kids may enjoy the Clay Center in Charleston. It includes the Avampato Discovery Museum which features Two floors of interactive science exhibits, An art gallery, The ElectricSky™ Theater, etc.

3. The WV Cultural Center is beside the Capitol and sits by the interstate in Charleston. The museum is currently closed for renovations but may be open by then. It contains art and history exhibits. http://www.wvculture.org/agency/cultcenter.html

3. On I-79 about an hour out of Charleston there is a small factory outlet in Flatwoods, WV. There's not a lot of shops there but it makes for a nice break. My fav is the Amish store with all its snacks and goodies.
