roaches in rental cars
Is it true that alot of rental cars in Kauai are infested with roaches? If so what do you do about it? We are picking up our car at night and just the thought of them crawling all over us gives me the creeps.

I too have heard stories about roaches in rental cars. I am VERY glad to report to you that I have NEVER had roaches in any of the cars I have rented in Hawaii and that covers 4 islands over 5 years. Now, maybe the little suckers were hiding under the seats, and if so they kept to their space and did NOT infringe upon mine, so out of site out of mind.

I have rented cars on Kauai, Maui and Oahu and never a problem. I hate roaches and heard that they abound in the islands, but in many trips there I have only spotted them outdoors, never in hotel rooms, restaurants or cars! However the last time I was in Kaui we found a gecko running around in our trunk and it scurried off before we had a chance to grab it. I kept hoping it exited the car and it wouldn't run up my leg while I was driving!!

I think geckos are cute, however, my girl friend and I had a resident gecko living up in the exposed rafters in our condo on the BI and the little devil would poop and it would drop down on the kitchen counter!!! I was thinking I should maybe wear a hat while in the kitchen..LOL I did NOT cook while staying there, not because of the pooping gecko...I don't go on vacation to cook.

Just back from what was probably my 10th trip to Kauai, never had a roach problem in any rental car there.
Brookwood you are a crack up.
Mary2Go, Geckos are too afraid of people, that is why you could not catch it.They would never venture anywhere near you. BTW they eat roaches too.

Life in the tropics is divine...but we have to accept some...ummm...less than lovely aspects of it, too. Yes, we get waterfalls and rainbows and beautiful weather (most of the time) -- but those danged cockroaches invade our territory no matter how clean we think our homes/cars/trucks are.
Roaches may be disgusting, but they're harmless and really don't want to interact with humans. They don't bite, and will do whatever it takes to get farrrrrrrr away from you, fast.
I'd rather see a cockroach in my truck anyday, than a bee or a centipede or (ack) a snake!

We had a cockroach problem with the convertible we rented from Dollar in 2004. We take part blame as my husband had a pop and must have spilled a little in the cup holder. Needless to say we were driving down the road and they came out and were crawling around my legs. Yes, I was freaking out! We immediately went to the airport to exchange it. With the second one we got, I saw one in the middle compartment.
We rented a van in 2005 from Dollar and it was fine. I would recommend not eating or drinking in the car.
