RIVERWALK SAN ANTONIO
I try to go to the Riverwalk every year - I even got married there! we are going again with my 24 year old son & want to do some other things. We've been to the safari and El Mercado. What else do you suggest to do? Is there any horsebackriding in the area? Thanks in advance.

It depends on what you mean by "the area" and when you're travelling.
If you travelling from afar to central TX, there's a lot to do in the Texas hill country, 1-2hr drive from S.A. Enchanted Rock, Johnson Estate, Fredricksburg NW of San Antonio, toobing on one of the rivers in New Braunfels or San Marcos. The Texas Hill Country is full of ranches, so I'm sure there are places for horseback riding, although I've never done it myself.
Golf aplenty in and around S.A. My favorite resort is Hill Country Hyatt, just West of S.A. Great family resort (better for small kids tho). Make a point of going there with the family once a year or so for a lazy long weekend.
Give us some more info about what you like to do, how far you want to roam, etc and we can fill in suggestions.

Not sure what safari you mean. The stables in Brackenridge Park near downtown have closed, try the nearby Hill Country for more options. There are some dude ranches outside town - try www.hill-country-visitor.com

We could drive an hour or two. Tubing sounds fun & I'll check out sites on the Texas Hill country. We like wildlife & scenery. We're from Detroit so anything non-urban sounds good. Maybe we'll heck out the mission trail also. Thanks for all your suggestions. Also must apologize for posting same thing twice - 1st time using forums

Hmm. I questioned whether to post this reply, but this forum is about open, honest advice....
There are 2 tubing (or toobing) places N of S.A. on IH35 The closest, and in my opinion the most fun is in New Braunfels. There are a couple of places to put in, with outfitters renting inner tubes (including tubes with a bottom to hold your cooler full of cold beverages).
New Braunfels is also home to one of the best water parks in the US, Schlitterbahn (they have a web site). Good fun for young and old, but I prefer the lazy float down the river myself. My young kids prefer the park. Used to go there once a year w/ work buddies & families. (till I moved back to the snowy northeast, that is)
The second one is a little farther north in San Marcos (closer to Austin). For the under 25 male crowd, this one is more popular, as SW Tx State Univ is located in San Marcos. On a hot spring day it's a floating party of students - guys and girls. The college has what some consider a favorable male/female ratio. Tubing is still good but for young guys there's the additional benefit of added "scenery". When I was 24 I didn't want my parents anywhere around when I was checking out girls. If you go there your son is likely to ask you to just drop him off and pick him up a few hrs later downstream.
Once school is out (mid May?), the college crowd seems wane in San Marcos.
