Really? It must depend on when you want a car. I find cars for $210 a week.

Hmm, are you looking for next week? Peak season?
Book way in advance for best rates. We're paying $350 for 8 days (booked 4months before departure)

Try discounthawaiicarrentals.com, used them before, they will book you with a major company.

Misleading. All depends on demand.

I regularly pay $150 per day on weekends in Manhattan for a mid size car with insurance, gas and taxes. Going up to $175 in April. Oh well.

A couple of weeks ago, I booked an 8 day rental in Maui for October for $292 with Budget using Discount Hawaii Car Rentals mentioned by jamie99.

I also used them for our 4 day Big Island car rental ($184).

There is a huge peak in demand for the Valentine's Day - President's Holiday times and yes, the rate could easily be $172 a day, if you can find a rental.

On The Big Island of Hawaii, the agencies will completely sell out of rentals over the Christmas holidays.

It really pays to plan ahead to avoid this scenario.

I always use Hotwire when I book car rentals for trips and vacations. If you look direct on line with the car company and then compare when you look at what Hotwire offers - I always save money.

Frank, shuttle out to JFK if you want to save a couple hundred on your weekend rentals. You can still return the car at an in-city location if you wish, at least with Hertz.

Holy COW! I guess it depends on your dates.

We got a mid-size car for $32 (with tax and fees) a day on Maui though Avis. Used the promotional code at this site. https://www.avis.com/car-rental/prof...CIATA=0102406I

This was the BEST deal I could find for Hawaii Rental cars and I looked everywhere including Costco and AAA!

utahtea, when I plugged in our dates using the Avis promotion code you provided, the total rental was $65 more than what I got through Discount Hawaii.

Can depend on a bunch of things:

Are you in the highest season?

Have you researchd and booked in advance?

What kind of car are you looking for (sub compact? SUV?)

Agree to search Hotwire and Kayak to see what they have.

Though the rates have increased from last year, it still depends on the dates you select and with whom you book. I just booked through costco for eight days in May for the BI. I got a pre tax rate of $20 a day. Costco was cheaper than Hotwire, Discount Hawaiian and Hawaiian Car Rentals. I believe as the trip get closer I will beat the Costco rate through Priceline or Hotwire.

bettyk, I'm doing in April/May and looks like you're going in October so that might be why our cost were different. I know that the great price was only on the mid-size car and didn't carry over to the suv's and convertibles.

One possible tip -- book a compact car and when you get to the lot they often don't have any and you get a midsize for the compact price. I just returned from a two-week trip to Maui, Oahu, and Kauai three days ago and three times out of four that happened for us. This was at Alamo each time, booked through Discount Hawaii Car Rentals mentioned by others above.
